“Scientists reveal how Greenland Ice Sheet has shrunk over past four decades

LONDON, Jan 17 (Reuters) – The Greenland Ice Sheet lost 5,091 sq km (1930 sq miles) of area between 1985 and 2022, according to a study in the journal Nature published on Wednesday, the first full ice-sheet wide estimate of area loss on that scale.”

They forgot to mention that the melting ended more than fifteen years ago.

“Things were looking bad around southeast Greenland a few years ago. There, the streams of ice flowing from the great ice sheet into the sea had begun speeding up in the late 1990s. Then, two of the biggest Greenland outlet glaciers really took off, and losses from the ice to the sea eventually doubled. Some climatologists speculated that global warming might have pushed Greenland past a tipping point into a scary new regime of wildly heightened ice loss and an ever-faster rise in sea level,

So much for Greenland ice’s Armageddon, “It has come to an end,” glaciologist Tavi Murray of Swansea University in the United Kingdom said during a session at the meeting. “There seems to have been a synchronous switch-off” of the speed-up, she said, Nearly everywhere around southeast Greenland, outlet glacier flows have returned to the levels of 2000.”

They also forgot to mention that this warming is cyclical.

“We find that the current Greenland warming is not unprecedented in recent Greenland history. Temperature increases in the two warming periods are of a similar magnitude, however, the rate of warming in 1920-1930 was about 50% higher than that in 1995—2005.”

Greenland’s Glaciers Melting, Scientist Says

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (INS)—
All the glaciers in eastern Greenland are rapidly melting, declared Prof. Hans Ahlmann, Swedish geologist, in a report to the Geographical society here on his recent expedition to the Arctic sub- continent.

“Everything points to the fact that the climate in that region has. been growing warmer during recent years,” the professor said.

“It may without exaggeration be said that the glaciers—like those in Norway—face the possibility of a catastrophic collapse.”

Cedar Rapids Gazette, Dec 11, 1939, p. 25

Temperatures in Greenland loosely track the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation and have been declining since 2010.

for the past 35 years all we hear about is melting melting melting melting melting yet the ferry boats still dock at the same pier on Manhattan Island. hhhmmmm

Now knowing that life existed on Earth without Greenland having ice for 100’s of millions of years, I don’t worry whether it is losing ice or not. They will probably find a Viking dairy farm under it. Went skiing yesterday and it was great. A neighbor informed me that last year was the hottest year ever, despite all the snow in Western US. If the average temperature was the hottest ever, then some areas must have had extremely hot weather to offset the extreme cold we experienced in other areas. So which areas of the world had those extraordinarily hot temperatures? Of course, the places where NASA and NOAA compute the temperature for from their models, but I’m just guessing.
