Jeff Masters Claims A Record Without Any Actual Data

Satellite loops show that Haiyan weakened only slightly, if at all, in the two hours after JTWC’s advisory, so the super typhoon likely made landfall with winds near 195 mph. This makes Haiyan the strongest tropical cyclone on record to make landfall in world history. The previous record was held by the Atlantic’s Hurricane Camille of 1969, which made landfall in Mississippi with 190 mph winds.

Dr. Jeff Masters’ WunderBlog : Super Typhoon Haiyan: Strongest Landfalling Tropical Cyclone on Record | Weather Underground

Alarmists are amazing, comparing aircraft measurements taken hours earlier with estimated surface measurements from Hurricane Camille (all of the wind gauges were destroyed) and then boldly declaring a record before any actual data is available.

The strongest surface winds being reported by Weather Underground in the region are 20 MPH.

Given the speed at which the Warmist dream world is falling apart, this sounds like an act of desperation on Master’s part.

    • Ernest Bush says:

Despite all the talk about history and stupid comments, this storm is a thing that can only inspire awe at the same time one thinks about what all the numbers mean. Thousands of people may die because of this weather event in the next 24 hours. Millions may have their lives changed forever because of the destructive energy wrapped up in the winds and water. And this even with days of warning.

  2. WPBHurricane05 says:

For alarmist, history started in 1971. Screw the preceding +1,971 years.

  3. D. Self says:

It’s easy to make up data and present it as fact with the State Run Media

  4. Steve R W says:

Cyclone Olivia in 1996 packed a punch.

“A new world record for wind speed has been set. According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), data was verified by a panel of experts to confirm that the previous record set on Mt. Washington, has now been broken. The new world record wind speed is 408 km/h set during Tropical Cyclone Olivia on April 10, 1996 at Barrow Island, Australia.”

From Anthony’s Re: the supposed record

Sorry, no. Super Typhoon Ida in 1958 is said to have central pressure of 877mb and 200 mph 1 minute sustained winds: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typhoon_Ida_%281958%29

  6. Yes that’s true. The first hurricane with a greater wind speed than a little hill in New Hampshire gets on a regular basis. Mt Washington gets 190 MPH winds all the time.

Mount Washington hit 140 MPH during superstorm Sandy which wasn’t even a hurricane but was twice hurricane speed up there.

Data!. We don’t need no stinkin’ data!

    We have computer models.

    • TomC says:

Satellite estimates, computer models, interpolation, urban temperature adjustments; all substitutes for real world data. For some reason, divergence in datasets occur after the introduction of all these false data sources but don’t question the false data sources.

  8. Bill S says:

Just thought of a question that even our esteemed blog host can’t answer.
What does it take to embarrass a democrat?

  9. Karl W. Braun says:

Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda, powerful though it was, is by no means the strongest storm. The one that struck the Philippines on October 13th, 1970 managed to snap coconut trees off at their bases and completely denude hillside forests.
