Holdren’s Ice Age Tidal Wave
As a long-time student of John P. Holdren’s gloomy visions of the future, like his warnings about global famines and resource shortages, I can’t resist passing along another one that has just been dug up. This one was made in 1971, long before Dr. Holdren came President Obama’s science adviser, in an essay just unearthed by zombietime (a blog that has been republishing excerpts of his past writings). In the 1971 essay, “Overpopulation and the Potential for Ecocide,” Dr. Holdren and his co-author, the ecologist Paul Ehrlich, warned of a coming ice age.

John Holdren in 1971: “New ice age” likely
In 1971, John Holdren edited and contributed an essay to a book entitled Global Ecology: Readings Toward a Rational Strategy for Man. He wrote (along with colleague Paul Ehrlich) the book’s sixth chapter, called “Overpopulation and the Potential for Ecocide.” (Click here to view a photograph of the table of contents, showing Holdren’s essay on pages 64-78; click on the image to the left to view the cover.) In their chapter, Holdren and Ehrlich speculate about various environmental catastrophes, and on pages 76 and 77 Holdren the climate scientist speaks about the probable likelihood of a “new ice age” caused by human activity (air pollution, dust from farming, jet exhaust, desertification, etc.).

“In 1971 Prof. Stephen Schneider of Stanford University claimed the earth was in danger from “Global Cooling”. One of his associates Prof. Paul Ehrlich also of Stanford stated,(also in 1971) “Carry on as we are and there is no chance of reaching the year 2000″.”

Where we find:
“We report here on the first results of a calculation in which separate estimates were made of the effects on global temperature of large increases in the amount of CO2 and dust in the atmosphere. It is found that even an increase by a factor of 8 in the amount of CO2, which is highly unlikely in the next several thousand years, will produce an increase in the surface temperature of less than 2 deg. K.
However, the effect on surface temperature of an increase in the aerosol content of the atmosphere is found to be quite significant. An increase by a factor of 4 in the equilibrium dust concentration in the global atmosphere, which cannot be ruled out as a possibility within the next century, could decrease the mean surface temperature by as much as 3.5 deg. K. If sustained over a period of several years, such a temperature decrease could be sufficient to trigger an ice age!”
You might not like the cold Steve, but it was perfect for the race Sunday morning. We froze our butts of up in the canyon and my feet didn’t have full feeling in them until about 4 miles into the race. You’d think that’d mean it was too cold, but after I got going, the cold weather was perfect for running in shorts/t-shirt! I had no problems with overheating. 🙂
We also enjoyed the snow flurries while eating free pizza at Coops at 1 pm…on May 1. Go figure.

It was 0 (F) last night in Churchill, Manitoba. The data set does not go back very far on the Weather Underground site, but for whatever it is worth, they broke their old record by 8 degrees. Stations in Nunavet were as cold as -13 (F). Also, it looks like Quebec Province is still at least 95% snow covered at this late date.
There must be very little melting going on. The sun is going to start back south in less than 2 months. It does not appear that we are headed to an ice-free Arctic this summer and the polar bears must be doing fine.
No, no Andy. Now it is too cold for polar bears. Too much ice.
Don’t you remember the story of Goldilocks? That is the basis of the new models coming out any minute now…
And changes in wind speed or direction could also be catastrophic, or not catastrophic enough.
