Biathlon usually refers specifically to the winter sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting
The sport has its origins in an exercise for Norwegian soldiers, as an alternative training for the military. The world’s first known ski club, the Trysil Rifle and Ski Club, was formed in Norway in 1861 to promote national defense at the local level.
Called military patrol, the combination of skiing and shooting was contested at the Olympic Winter Games in 1924, and then demonstrated in 1928, 1936, and 1948, but did not regain Olympic recognition then, as the small number of competing countries disagreed on the rules (see also Governing body, below). During the mid-1950s, however, biathlon was introduced into the Soviet and Swedish winter sport circuits and was widely enjoyed by the public. This newfound popularity aided the effort of having biathlon gain entry into the Winter Olympics.

I read somewhere they are switching to air rifles because of imagined safety issues.
I do not think this is the “Air Rifle” they are talking about:

I am not certain how to do a proper link thingy. The air rifle thing reminded me of the one shown at Cabela’s.
It’s an ugly link but it works.
That rifle does look a lot like the one in the biathalon picture.
It shoots a .357 slug at 800 fps! and a 38 special is between 750 and 1100 fps.
We are talking a serious”Air” rifle here!
Yes, certainly good enough for subduing a lunatic.
Grampy, cut’n’paste this …
REPLACE … xxx = LINK … yyy = Description
They shoot water buffalo in Africa with air rifles.
Air rifles was the only thing Sherlock Holmes was afraid of.
this is a smaller caliber
It is also a test of my ability to do linky!
Thanks Blade! It worked!
You’re welcome. Forgot to mention something …
If you use more than one link in a comment, the software routes the message to a queue for approval (‘awaiting moderation’), and it makes more work for Steve.
This is why you see people posting lots of links into lots of separate consecutive comments.
This is the model I own, and love…

This is the closest I have to an “Air” Rifle and my wife loves it!:
