First came a clever marketing ploy from JetBlue Airways: $4 flights Saturday between Burbank and Long Beach airports.
A flurry of Twitter activity ensued, followed by tough talk from the Wolfpack Hustle, a local cycling club, that six of its best riders could beat the 150-seat Airbus A320 — including drive time to and from the airports, check-in and security screening.
In the end, the cyclists crushed it, cruising along the Los Angeles River to reach the final destination, the lighthouse in Shoreline Aquatic Park, in 1 hour and 34 minutes.
The plane had barely taken off. Cyclist Joe Anthony, on board as part of the challenge, said there was only one advantage to the airliner.
“It’s legal to drink beer and fly, whereas the cyclists have to follow all the rules,” he said.
Disrupting the Borg is expensive and time consuming!

Even though I am a cyclist, I must admit the beer part of the flight sounds attractive. Hot and sweaty vs. a cold one? Hmmm…….
This should work fine on any cycling excursion.
The beer helmet..One straw from two beers for convenient hands free, volume beer drinking delivery.

Alcohol and cycling goes together like gasoline and matches.
I know this.
If you’re trying to insinuate that gasoline & matches are the perfect summertime companions, you’re talking my language. & Jacques Anquetil’s too.
I was riding on a dark trail last night along a creek, when I heard some drunk college kids coming the other way. One of them went down right in front of me – she said she hit a crack.
She didn’t have a helmet on and was lucky to escape with just a nasty scrape on her elbow.
People need to realize that just 150 years ago. Most people never went past 50 miles from where they were born.
“the cyclists have to follow all the rules,”
He’s not from the San Francisco area.
Or frankly any city I’ve lived or ridden in. Drinking a beer & smoking a cigar while riding no-hands was fairly common back when I rode more. It’s not that I wouldn’t now, but cigars are too expensive to risk biting in half when you get buzzed by a taxi.
