A while back I promised to publish a Fedora Linux VMWare image which contained many essential tools for analyzing climate/weather data. That turned out to be a big pain, but since my Canadian Ubuntu epiphany last week, I realized that building an Ubuntu VM with all the right stuff will be quite simple. I will try to get that out this weekend.
Disrupting the Borg is expensive and time consuming!

I used to love Ubuntu but that Unity GUI drove me nuts.
Like so many others I found a way to turn the clock back. Currently I use Mint 14 with the MATE desktop. Simple, clean and elegant.
On Ubuntu I feel the same.
I moved to OpenSUSE (via Debian, and many others..)
I’m liking Scientific Linux. It’s basically RHEL 6, but with more drivers or wi-fi cards, Flash, etc. It’s still gnome 2 based (works on a crappy Compaq nx6325 I picked out of salvage!) and uses rpm (which I like). And it works great in VirtualBox.
Sorry. This is not an advertisement.
I haven’t tried that distro. I’ve had issues with Red Hat and H/W before (over a year ago) so maybe it’s due for another try. I like the old Gnome2 desktop, easily the best one they abandoned. Might try giving it a whirl this weekend (if I got time).
I have been using Debian-based Linux of one flavor or another since the late 1990’s. I would never use anything else. I managed 600 servers in the midwest at one point from my livingroom on the west coast. We use Ubuntu at work. I use it for my personal stuff.
I think I’ve found their nest… Maybe I’ll drop by Best Buy and see what Linux distributions they are selling (like visiting the reptile house at the zoo).
What I really want is my own research institute, with people I can tell to do all the things that need doing. They just don’t make good software, to compare with that…
…nor “good” people to do things, these days, when it comes down to it.
It really is a growing problem. I finally got over being amazed at the number of newbies coming into my section that really were surprised that they were expected to show up everyday, on-time, and actually do their jobs. Then there were those who were fired because they refused to believe that. The amount of scheduling problems they created was incredibly large.
Harry you can download most linux distros for free. Just download the ISO and burn it to CD or DVD. If you are a little more savvy, you can download Unetbootin or LinuxliveUSB creater to install the ISO to a USB drive.
They are all “live” these days, which means you can boot and run from the drive to test it out.
Steve, I would recommend Oracle VM VirtualBox … works like a charm, is really simple to work with, and is free.
https://virtualbox.org/
vmware player is also free
How’s the performance of vmware player? I haven’t used vmware in years, but I remember it being expensive (I’ll have to look up player) and it really wasn’t much better that virtualbox. Is player crippleware? Or is it “full-featured”?
…better *than* virtualbox. better *than*. Sorry. Apparently I’m unable to type at this site.
vmware player is better than virtual box. I use both
+1 VirtualBox.
I may have to do that, because vmware player doesn’t do snapshots.
I’m a heavy VB user. Let me know if you need a tester.

All I do is copy the image to another directory, and/or rename it….will that work for you?
That would work too.
I have also settled on Ubuntu…I used a stripped down version (~1gb on the drive) with the Enlightenment desktop.
You do not have to use Unity, you can find an Ubuntu with pretty much any desktop environment you want….you can even have multiple DE’s and switch back and forth!
