Jeff Masters’ claim of 195 MPH – worst hurricane ever at landfall – was complete bullshit, but exactly what he wanted. He got his big lie out all over the Internet and is now sacred and unassailable knowledge of the alarmist community.
Weather officials said Haiyan had sustained winds of 235 kph (147 mph) with gusts of 275 kph (170 mph) when it made landfall. That makes it the world’s strongest typhoon this year, said Aldczar Aurelio of the government’s weather bureau.
Jen Carfagno, on the Weather Channel this AM, pointed out the the extreme winds of Haiyan were confined to a remarkably tight band around the eyewall. I guess she didn’t get them memo to hype the storm.
Except for the freaky band around the eyewall, it was just another typhoon.

I keep hearing ‘estimated’ wind speeds.
Wind gauges are a thing of the past.
This also ties into the popular description of storm damage in terms of property damage and/or death toll. Storms don’t have to become “stronger” if you allow people to build on coastal flood plains the damage becomes “greater” and thus storms are worse then ever before. Perfect for the mind numbed robots and the media (sorry, was that redundant?).
Yes my red flag popped up when I hear about 200mph plus wind speed yet only three deaths on a very densely populated island.
The AGW %$# Hats needed something to crow about because the season is pretty much done and they weren’t getting the attention this year they so desired. Even Masters says the winds are estimated.
