Dorothy: The surface area of the Earth is 197 million square miles.
The surface area of the lower 48 is just over 3 million square miles, of which less than 3 million miles is land.
So the number, supplied not by me but by Media Matters (that thing you see there is a block quote) is correct.
Generally, over that period of winter the Northern Hemisphere was exceptionally warm.

If you knew that, why did you headline “2012 was the hottest year on record” if that number only represented 1.5% of the Earth?
BTW – 2012 wasn’t a “hot” year in the US – it had very mild spring temperatures which brought the annual average up. Do you think of 60 degrees as being “hot?”

I take it that you have placed temperature monitoring stations all over the oceans in all of the Northern Hemisphere so that you can make such statements. After all, the areas that are really measured on land is but a tiny portion of the whole of the hemisphere and there is a lot of ocean out there.
By the way, when do you predict that the Holocene will end? I hope it is after I am gone as glaciers all over the northern U.S. will play havoc with the NFL season. I also notice that just within the Holocene itself there were much warmer times than present. Did early mankind have wood fired SUVs that we have not been told about? (a stone age industrial revolution perhaps?)
Oh, another question: why does the government agencies have to “adjust” the present temperatures upwards and the past temps downwards if CO2 is burning us all to death? Seems to me like the raw data should support your hypothesis. (sorry, your religion)

The planet as a whole has dropped in temperature over the past 39 months.
Our esteemed political scientists haven’t been able to use the tools at their disposal here in the 21st century and that is a shame.
We do know without a shadow of a doubt how planetary conditions move from glacial states to inter-glacial states and visa versa, but apparently you haven’t been keeping up with the science.
Look a bit further at the most recent research, and you’ll understand why the eminent among us can never apologize for their slightly neurotic behavior and predictions.

The U.S. is suffering from significant shrinkage this year.
Most of the surface of the Earth is water and there are two main measurements to look at: the Argo data shows such a tiny warning trend in the ocean surface, it is barely measurable. The other thing to check is the sea ice area, which seems to be up this year.
Those readings don’t need to adjust for time if observation, nor urban heat, nor site instrumentation changes, or any of that other stuff.

And even that might be a very optimistic judgement of the data. I have yet to see any realistic margin of error for the Argo data. The claim that the oceans are warming is based on a supposed measurement that is less than a tenth of a degree over decades.
Isn’t it amazing… we can measure the global ocean over a half century with readings of hundredths of degrees, but the land measurements are so bad that we have to “adjust” them by whole degrees over the same period.

Look at the masthead: “Culture as science. Science as culture.” That is the working definition of “post-normal science”–“consensus” is another–which is to say, it is not objective (“culture” being a subjective judgment, in the eyes of the beholder) and thus not science at all. That masthead might as well read, “Culture as truth. Truth as culture.”, because that is what it means, what he believes (or what he wants people to believe). As a scientist, you can’t expect to communicate with him–he is a mewling child, afraid to face reality, and determined not to (as his “you are very confused” telegraphs, if it weren’t already clear from his refusal to see your point and accept it).
Science, IMO, is the attempt to remove cultural preconceptions from analysis and descriptions of reality, to the extent possible, by careful reference to observation and measurement. Progressives, post-modernists, and warmists simply declare that they are above all that and hence are free to impose their own group’s assumptions. The results of such assumption of absolute power are as predicted: absolute corruption.

Greg- correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the data of the kind to be able to say “hottest, or coldest on record” only 135 years old or so-when we started to record actual temperatures? If so, a few warm years out of 135 when comparable data for the other 4 billion is missing wouldn’t mean much, would it?

When I have 6 inches of snow on the ground and the “offical’ records show the temperature above freezing and that snow as RAIN the creditability of NAAO just went to ZERO!
This was not just for one day but for THREE day.BTW
Also the temperatures this summer for my location were adjusted UP AGAIN six months after they had been adjusted up by 2-3°F the next day.
If there was some way of putting you and your buddies in jail for fraud/ and or treason I would certainly try.
