Progressives really want to forget the 1930s
It is all starting to fit together now. Hitler, Roswell, aliens, Argentina, Maradona ….

Winston deserves another ration of Victory Gin for that one!
1948 eh? Hmm …
I think that the date was homogenized… 🙂
They obviously misspelled 1984.
You can nearly taste the desperate need to believe in the photo. A lot like Carbonists.
Thanks for demonstrating how pitiful recent summer heat has been compared to that of the 1930’s.
These Austrians were ecstatic. One of our own!
I once saw Whoopi Goldberg and David Crosby just as elated after an election.
LIFE now hires people that don’t even bother to look in the magazines impressive archives?
BTW Feb 1, 1943 marked the official end of the Guadalcanal campaign. The Japanese soldiers had come to call the place “starvation island” and survivors had been successfully evacuated to prevent them being wiped out by US Army and Marine forces. Most people agree with the vast majority of historians that say that the battle of Midway was the turning point of WW II in the Pacific. IMO as great as the results of that battle were, it was still a defensive victory and after it was over the Imperial Japanese Navy still had superiority in numbers of every class of war ship in the Pacific over the USN and allies and the forces of Nippon were still conducting offensive operations.
It was at Guadalcanal that the US gained the strategic initiative for the allies in the Pacific and they never lost it after that. Admiral ‘Bull’ Halsey said it best:
“”Before Guadalcanal the enemy advanced at his pleasure
— after Guadalcanal he retreated at ours.”
