On this date in 1914, Spencer, West Virginia was 82 degrees. About a third of the US was over 60 degrees. Why doesn’t Bernie Sanders remember?
Disrupting the Borg is expensive and time consuming!

Reality control? Doublethink? Senility? Does anyone expect physics from someone who cannot remember the word “willing” is in the definition of Supply and Demand?

Rudyard Kipling wrote about the Progressives and Socialists back when they were still known as the Bandar-log:
Mowgli could not help laughing when the Bandar-log began, twenty at a time, to tell him how great and wise and strong and gentle they were, and how foolish he was to wish to leave them. “We are great. We are free. We are wonderful. We are the most wonderful people in all the jungle! We all say so, and so it must be true,” they shouted. “Now as you are a new listener and can carry our words back to the Jungle-People so that they may notice us in future, we will tell you all about our most excellent selves.” Mowgli made no objection, and the monkeys gathered by hundreds and hundreds on the terrace to listen to their own speakers singing the praises of the Bandar-log, and whenever a speaker stopped for want of breath they would all shout together: “This is true; we all say so.”
I grew up reading Kipling, and this is one of my favorites…
The Gods of the Copybook Headings
AS I PASS through my incarnations in every age and race,
I make my proper prostrations to the Gods of the Market Place.
Peering through reverent fingers I watch them flourish and fall,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings, I notice, outlast them all.
We were living in trees when they met us. They showed us each in turn
That Water would certainly wet us, as Fire would certainly burn:
But we found them lacking in Uplift, Vision and Breadth of Mind,
So we left them to teach the Gorillas while we followed the March of Mankind.
We moved as the Spirit listed. They never altered their pace,
Being neither cloud nor wind-borne like the Gods of the Market Place,
But they always caught up with our progress, and presently word would come
That a tribe had been wiped off its icefield, or the lights had gone out in Rome.
With the Hopes that our World is built on they were utterly out of touch,
They denied that the Moon was Stilton; they denied she was even Dutch;
They denied that Wishes were Horses; they denied that a Pig had Wings;
So we worshipped the Gods of the Market Who promised these beautiful things.
When the Cambrian measures were forming, They promised perpetual peace.
They swore, if we gave them our weapons, that the wars of the tribes would cease.
But when we disarmed They sold us and delivered us bound to our foe,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: “Stick to the Devil you know.”
On the first Feminian Sandstones we were promised the Fuller Life
(Which started by loving our neighbour and ended by loving his wife)
Till our women had no more children and the men lost reason and faith,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: “The Wages of Sin is Death.”
In the Carboniferous Epoch we were promised abundance for all,
By robbing selected Peter to pay for collective Paul;
But, though we had plenty of money, there was nothing our money could buy,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: “If you don’t work you die.”
Then the Gods of the Market tumbled, and their smooth-tongued wizards withdrew
And the hearts of the meanest were humbled and began to believe it was true
That All is not Gold that Glitters, and Two and Two make Four
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings limped up to explain it once more.
As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool’s bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;
And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!
Hey gator! Great poem! And sadly, a bit too relevant to our current social system. We do live in interesting times — and the wealthier a society becomes, the more foolishness it can afford to finance, until at last, the system breaks, the easy times go away, and the Gods of the Copybook Headings come back to a class of more chastened students.
Yes, but by late February and March 1914, severe, even record snowstorms struck the East Coast from South Carolina to New York. Those people had not yet discovered jetsream disruption, Global Weirding or the Polar Vortex. They willfully lived in ignorance, without knowledge of the irreparable damage caused to the environment by guns, straight, white males and AGW! Never again!
He doesn’t remember because he was only a teenager then 🙂
I should not be smarting of because he is not much older than me 🙁
Most people have very short memories about weather and half the population is too young to remember anything from more than the last decade or two. So, it’s good to provide reminders like this to give them some perspective.
I was out in shorts hand watering the lawn today because of little rain over the last month. The temperature is in the 70’s here in Central Texas today and forecast to reach low 80’s Sunday, which could be a record for the date. Then we are forecast to plunge back down to below freezing later next week. Typical weather here. Nothing unusual.
Yea your in for some exceptionally cold weather in Feb it seems. Check out the daily update for today:

RAH, I wouldn’t be surprised. The last two years we have had hard freezes late season that nipped lots of plants in the bud. Might be three in a row. All the plants and birds are behaving as if spring is here already, same as last year around this time. It got down to 20.7F on 3/3/14 and 25.5F on 3/6/15 in my backyard, which is usually one of the warmer spots around the area.
It most certainly is a good indication of how weak the Hill monster is that this leftist buffoon is giving her a run for her money.
Nothing is more admirable in politics than a short memory!
Baby this world is cold! Snow in Kuwait for the first time in that countries history:
