The October 1, 1953 Heatwave

September/October brought an unprecedented heatwave in 1953. On this date in 1953, much of the country was over 90 and 100 degrees. There were 90 degree temperatures as far north as Ithaca, New York – where my life started four years later.

    Then you may remember trick-or-treat in a snowsuit, in 3-foot drifts, in about 1964 (as I do from Utica), and kids doing the same thing in short sleeves in about 1988 or 89 (as I remember from living then in Rome, NY).
