Arctic Sea Ice Continues To Grow

The volume of Arctic sea ice is very close to the median over the past 12 years, and continues to grow.

There has been no trend in Arctic sea ice extent or volume over the past twelve years.

The Northwest Passage is blocked with the thickest ice in years.

Last year, Arctic ambulance chasers were focused on the “ice hole in the Barents Sea.”  But there is lots of ice in the Barents Sea, so they have moved their clown show to the Bering Sea.

Science News asks “what happens when the Bering Sea becomes ice-free?”

The Bering Sea loses its ice every spring. Perhaps they can use the last few hundred thousand years for reference? There was no ice (or water) in the Bering Sea when the first humans moved to America 25,000 years ago – during the last ice age.

How did the first americans get here

Alaska was largely ice-free during the last ice age, for the same reason Bering Sea ice is low this year.  During ice ages, the jet stream brings mild air to Alaska, and cold air to Canada and much of the US.

The last thing I would ever expect climate researchers to do, is engage in actual scientific research. It just doesn’t seem to happen.

  1. Bob Hoye says:

I think that the theory than early migrants came down through an ice-free corridor has been impractical.
My questioning of this is based upon spending some time back-packing as well as canoe tripping.
One can carry about 50 pounds with some kind of pack. The so-called ice corridor would likely be tundra with who knows how much game.
Traveling by a small boat such as the Eskimo umiak would be almost luxurious by comparison. A 25-foot boat could carry some 3,000 pounds of gear plus a family.
And paddling is much easier and faster than hiking–even in flat valleys.
And the amount of food along the coast is incredible compared to that on the land.
One researcher notes that the Ainu on the Japanese archipeligo had such boats some 20,000 years ago and arrived at the Olympics some 11,000 years ago. And Kennewick Man at the Columbia River some 9,500 years ago.
“Kennewick” was identified as having lived mainly on the coast and from Alaska.
Also, the big cedars for big ocean-going 35-foot long canoes later used would have been impossible.
Cedars had moved south to California until the well into the interglacial at some 6,000 years ago when they had returned to the coast of BC.

    • Rah says:

Remember that the sea levels were much lower during the last glaciation. About 400 feet lower than present day at the peak. People lived places where the English channel now flows. They could walk between Japan and Korea.

  2. Psalmon says:

According to this tweet, NSIDC has the Arctic already peaking in extent and at a record low. Just heads up. I can’t find this chart there.

    • Jim Hunt says:

@Psalmon – Apparently Tony prefers to rely on DMI extent data.

He doesn’t much care for NSIDC or AMSR2 numbers. Here’s the latest for the latter:

    • MrGrimnasty says:

Of course the extent has already peaked, volume usually continues to grow a little longer. The max extent was not a record low. The current extent is so close to numerous previous years as makes no odds. Drawing a big red arrow head on the end is intended to give a misleading impression. Extent is highly dependent on currents/wind and can mislead as to how much ice is actually present.

Having said all that, an ‘ice free’ summer Arctic is a natural condition, so who cares, it is not a disaster and proves nothing.

    • spike55 says:

No , its only at a low when looking at the last 40 years.

Its currently far higher than for most of the first 8000 or so years of the current interglacial.

Its actually only marginally down from the extremes high levels of the Little Ice Age.

After that coldest period in 10,000 years, we have had a bit of highly beneficial warming, so NATURALLY the sea ice levels drop a bit.

Jimbo is trying to make out there is some sort of mythical human cause behind this NATURAL drop in sea ice levels.

Jimbo is a clueless clown, and a CLIMATE CHANGE DENIER

When AOC says there is no such thing as “illegal aliens” since the land they’re invading was once theirs – she could also be describing Russians that migrated via the Bering land-bridge.

    • Gator says:

Great! My ancestors once owned about a third of Manhattan, until the US government seized it. Does this mean I can have it back now, and live in any of the buildings located there? Have AOC check the legality on that for me.

    • arn says:

200 + countries and their laws know very well about illegal aliens(and all countries that once existed before too).

The only guys who all of a sudden did not know are progressives who think that they define, demand, rewrite and redefine whatever they want.

At least until some illegal aliens enter their gated community and try to live in their houses-then all od a sudden they would instantly know that illegal aliens/intruders exist.

  4. Denis Rushworth says:

Your chart shows the earliest migrants went to the Washington DC area. Perhaps that is the source of all our problems.

  5. Matthew Bruha says:

Can I ask why one camp prefers DMI data and the other prefers NSIDC or AMSR2 numbers? Is it purely because it suits each agenda, or are there scientific reasons behind each preference?

    • Jim Hunt says:

You can ask of course, but receiving an answer might not be so easy.

No doubt just like me you’re anxiously awaiting Tony’s scientific explanation for his camp’s marked preference for DMI data! Here’s the latest update:

      • spike55 says:

WOW, that’s an AWFUL lot of sea ice up there, Jimbo-the-dunce.

FAR MORE than there was for most of the last 10,ooo years.

Current levels are probably around the same as in the 1940’s and MUCH HIGHER than during the Medieval Warm Period and the 8000-9000 years before that.

Why are you so desperate to remain a CLIMATE CHANGE DENIER, Jimbo ??

Is it just WILFUL IGNORANCE !!!!

Certainly , you have shown yourself to be TOTALLY INCAPABLE of accepting or learning basic facts.

        • Jim Hunt says:

I think you need to brush up on your scientific prose writing skills Spike.

All caps is deprecated these days.

          • TimA says:

            That’s all you’ve got…funny…
You’re such a major thorn in our side….ZZZZZ

          • Jim Hunt says:

That doesn’t sound a whole lot like a “scientific reason” either Tim.

          • spike55 says:

So absolutely ZERO to counter the facts.

You are an EMPTY, LYING, climate change denier, Jimbo.

          • spike55 says:

You wouldn’t know what “scientific reason” was, Jimbo

You have NEVER been able to produce any.

You are EMPTY of all rational thought,

            Full of slimy brain-washed mantra.

      • Matthew Bruha says:

I was asking for explanations from both camps. Why do you prefer data from sources other than DMI?

        • Jim Hunt says:

I look at data from all sorts of sources. Here’s a selection:

          http://GreatWhiteCon.info/resources/

Have you ever wondered why the DMI numbers are so much higher than those from the NSIDC at this time of year?

When it comes to extent perhaps it isn’t common knowledge (especially in here!) that the DMI extent metric is derived from OSI-SAF concentration data that includes the Great Lakes as part of “The Arctic”?

          • spike55 says:

Nope, that site is a CON and a SCAM, it LIES by ommssion about the current level of sea ice being FAR HIGHER than it has been for most of the last 10,000 years

Jimbo is a LIAR and a low-level deceitful SCAMMER who CANNOT allow himself to state the REAL facts about extreme levels of Arctic sea ice over the last 300 years.

He is in TOTAL DENIAL of natural climate change.

        • spike55 says:

Here is the data you REALLY need to know.

          1. Notice that current levels of sea ice are similar to the 1940s
          https://i.postimg.cc/FzZ25y1d/Arctic-Sea-Ice-Alekseev-2016-as-shown-in-Connolly-2017.jpg

          2. Notice that for nearly ALL the last 10,000 years, Arctic sea ice levels have been far LOWER than current
          https://i.postimg.cc/Jz7j7h4N/Arctic-Sea-Ice-Holocene-Stein-17.jpg

Notice that the mid0late 1970s were a period of EXTREME sea ice, up there with the Little Ice Age.
          https://i.postimg.cc/4x4xCnCd/Icelandic_sea_ice_index_2.png

          4. Notice that temperatures in Iceland were warmer or similar to now in the 1940s
          https://i.postimg.cc/Z5Kh4nnz/iceland.jpg

These are the FACTS that you will NOT find on Jimbo’s little propaganda CON of a web site.

Telling less than HALF the truth, is a deceitful LIE, Jimbo.

          • Jim Hunt says:

Here is the data you really need to know. It’s the latest edition of Tony’s DMI metric du jour:

To my admittedly ageing eyes it is showing unmistakeable signs of being “lowest for the date in the satellite record”:

To my admittedly ageing eyes it is showing unmistakeable signs of being “lowest for the date in the satellite record”

That’s because you are a hateful idiot. The satellite era did not start in 1979.

Genocide Jim, you have never explained why you hate poor brown people so very much. Why not tell us now? It’s not like it is a secret that you would rather see millions of poor brown people starved to death than lose any more meaningless ice in the Arctic. So what is your excuse?

          • Jim Hunt says:

Gator – Where did I say “The satellite era did start in 1979”?

          • Gator says:

SO you admit that “lowest for the date in the satellite record” is a lie. Great!

So now explain why you hate poor brown people so very much, and why you would rather see millions of poor brown people starved to death than lose any more meaningless ice in the Arctic. So what exactly is your excuse/problem?

          • Jim Hunt says:

Please show me your evidence from any April 5th “in the satellite era” where Arctic sea ice extent was lower than 2019.

          • Gator says:

Genocide Jim, I wasn’t the hateful fool who made an asinine claim. It’s up to you to show you aren’t just parroting ignorance.

So now you need to not only explain your extreme hatred of poor brown people, you also need to prove your claim, or slither back under your rock.

God you are way too easy to bait. LOL

          • Jim Hunt says:

In actual fact it’s up to you to show you aren’t just parroting ignorance.

Here’s the latest evidence from DMI:

          • Gator says:

Sorry Genocide Jim, but psychological projection and Jedi mind tricks don’t work on me. We have long known that you are completely unaware of Occam’s Razor, and how science really works, so let me help you out you little minded hater of poor brown people.

            “Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence”

I am not making any wild claims, you are a55hole.

You may think you are cute and clever, but you are far, far from it. Your agenda is a disease that rots away whatever average intelligence you may have once possessed. The biggest idiots are those that think they are the smartest person in the room.

            Now slither away.
