“It Is Not A Black Vs. White Problem”

I had a long discussion today with an immigrant from the Caribbean. She moved to Baltimore in 1990, and taught in the public schools there for several years, until her husband insisted that she quit.

Every day as a teacher she was threatened and abused by “black teenage boys.” She said that people have no idea how frightening it is dealing with these gangsters. She said it had nothing to do with money – the Baltimore Schools are the best funded in region.

She said that kids throw laptops and other pieces of expensive equipment on the floor. They have no interest in learning, and have never been taught any responsibility.

She arrived in the US uneducated and by working hard got a Masters degree over the next 19 years. It is a cultural problem, not a racial bias problem.

It is not a black vs. white problem. It is sick white progressives feeding a sick culture of entitlement.

My grandfather was a public high school principal in the early/mid 20th century in Buffalo NY. His school was overwhelmingly black. All of 5′ 7″ or so and likely under 140 lbs, he would walk the halls with the bag of collected lunch money without worry. It was a different time and most importantly a different culture–a much more proud culture. Shame was something that had impact. I couldn’t agree more about this not being a white/black issue. Progressives don’t understand this because they are inherently racist. God forbid a progressive judge someone by the content of his character and not the boxes checked in the census.

I was in Rochester New York during that time frame and you are correct. There wasn’t a white/black issue. I lived in the ‘inner city’ and the houses and yards were all neat and tidy. At that time the city did not have a ‘slum’

A couple points a lot of people miss is:
      1. There were no street people. vagrants were picked up and either sent to the county farm or if needed to a mental facility.

      2. With the development of pyschotropic drugs, the left clambered to have the inmates of the mental institutions released and ‘Mainstreamed’ They also insisted making people work on the county farm as partial payment for room and board was ‘degrading’ This meant a lot of facilities for housing less able people were shut down and as a result our jails filled and we now have ‘street people’

      Incarceration rate graph

…..President John F. Kennedy signed the Community Mental Health Centers Act of 1963… In 1955, when Kennedy was a senator, he sponsored the Mental Health Study Act, which assigned a joint commission to create detailed assessments of mental health care and the effect mental illness had on American society, according to an article by David Rochefort. The study advised a new role for state hospitals as intensive treatment sites that would be much smaller in size, …Kennedy argued that because of the benefits of new psychotropic drugs, people with mental illness could live in more natural community settings. Kennedy suggested Congress allocate funds to train more mental health professionals, to build more programs and facilities and to continue research. His goal was to reduce by 50 percent the number of patients in state mental hospitals in 10 to 20 years, according to Rochefort. As a result of Kennedy’s legislation, the number of patients in state mental hospitals declined by 62 percent by 1975.

In 1955 state mental institutions in the U.S. housed nearly 560,000 patients, according to William Gronfein, an associate professor at Indiana…

      Olmstead Case Decided by S.C.

The U.S. Supreme Court’s 1999 Olmstead ruling gave institutionalized mental health patients more ammunition in seeking community-based care. The case was brought against the Georgia commissioner of human resources by two women with mental illness who were confined for treatment at the psychiatric unit of the Georgia Regional Hospital at Atlanta. Their treatment teams had concluded that the women could receive appropriate care in a community setting, but the women remained institutionalized, according to the case. Their lawyers argued that denial of this treatment was a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Title II of the ADA states that programs and services offered by public entities must be provided in an integrated setting, unless separate or different measures are necessary to ensure equal opportunity. The U.S. Department of Justice defined an integrated setting as one “that enables individuals with disabilities to interact with non-disabled persons to the fullest extent possible.” The ruling of the case affirmed that under ADA unjustifiable institutionalization of a person with a disability is discrimination …..

The number of mentally ill Marylanders jailed in state prisons has steadily increased in recent years, as the state has shrunk the number of patients in its psychiatric hospitals, officials say. Of the roughly 26,000 inmates in Maryland penitentiaries, about 4,200, or 16 percent, have been diagnosed with a mental illness, said Dr. James Holwager, director of Mental Health Services for the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services. That represents about a 5 percent jump from two years earlier, he said. The increase of the mentally ill in Maryland prisons mirrors a national trend and coincides with a decades-long push to move patients out of mental hospitals and into community-based care. Nationally, the percentage of mentally ill in prisons has grown from about 5 percent about 25 years ago to closer to 20 percent today, Holwager said. As psychiatric hospitals closed, advocates say, insufficient funds were provided for community care and residential programs, leaving some mentally ill without proper treatment and with nowhere to go. “Where are [the mentally ill] going to get their services?” asked Dan Martin, director of public policy of the Mental Health Association of Maryland. “It’s more likely to be in jail.” –

I had a (white) friend that taught middle school in a heavily minority area of Houston. She would complain about the students, the administrators, and all the other nonsense that was tolerated. She had a very hard time disciplining students that were out of control. If she told someone to go to the Principal’s Office, they would usually response by cursing her out as a racist. Apparently it didn’t dawn on the students that if the entire class of 30 kids are all Latino and you are the only one being disciplined then racism isn’t a very good explanation.

She also told me how her first year she gave kids the grades they earned.
Many students didn’t pay attention in class, didn’t turn in homework, and bombed every test. Before the first grades went out, the school administration called her into the office and told her that she simply could not flunk so many students. She explained that she was already bending over backwards to help the kids by accepting homework late and by offering a ton of extra credit opportunities, but many students simply weren’t doing anything. The administration just told her that she needed to “fix it” so that no more than 25% of the students were flunking.

I shudder to think what those school districts look like now, with the flood of 100,000+ school-age minors into the country over the last couple of years, which the Dept of Education insists are all entitled to a free US education.

This is happening now and has been happening for 30 years. I have been in and out of the public schools for years now in various teaching situations and all across the country. It is sad and frightening to be in the schools now, as a student who would like to learn or a teacher who wants to teach. I have personally witnessed the laptops being thrown around, 18 year old males with apple laptops and 3 credits toward graduation sitting in a classroom with a hoodie covering their face(s). Brand new building, trash everywhere, teachers barely older than their students and unable to cope or discipline at all. Students roaming the halls, eating constantly and seldom finding a trash can. The woman in the original story is correct to fear for her life in that school.

If Walmart and other huge employers paid living wages and gave health insurance to workers, they wouldn’t need ‘Obamacare’ or foodstamps and other things!

Wages have stagnated or fallen greatly for the lower half of the working class for years and years. And then you all wonder why so many need Federal poverty aid.

      • squid2112 says:

Ah, the good old “living wage” cry. Painfully obvious that you are a useful idiot.

Explain to me exactly what a “living wage” is.

        Who defines a “living wage”?

My “living wage” may be more than your “living wage”. Who determines that?

Should Walmart be forced to pay you more than the value that you offer to the company, just so it can pay you a “living wage”?

What happens to the prices of goods and services when a company is forced to increase the rate of pay to meet someone’s “living wage”?

If a company is forced to increase wages, what happens to their workforce? Does it expand or shrink?

If I have been working in my field for 30 years, and have gained great skill and experience during that time, and I bring a much greater value to the company that an entry level person, why should MY wages be stifled so that a “living wage” can be provided to the entry level person? Is that not stealing from ME? Am I not now being treated as a slave to the entry level workforce?

Why should I be penalized because of another persons lower skill, lower experience, lower productivity?

If I continue to clothe and feed someone, what motivation does that individual have to produce for themselves? When does it stop? At what point do you quit paying for the non-producers?

If I can get “Federal poverty aid” (as you put it), then why should I work so hard to feed my family when I can make YOU do it?

      • cdquarles says:

Walmart and other employers already pay a living wage. You agreed to work at the price offered. It is up to you to make yourself more valuable if you want to make more money.

That employers even offer ‘medical’ insurance is an artifact of FDR’s FASCIST New Deal and the effects of wartime wage and price controls coupled with a horrendously steep ‘progressive’ ‘income’ tax. To the extent that you have employer offered ‘benefits’ they come out of your wages and you, the employee, are paying the freight. The company is paid by the customers. Guess what happens when you price yourself out of the market, willingly or otherwise.

      • rishrac says:

You are referring to corporate welfare. If you are working and need section 8 housing and food stamps, who’s paying for it? Are you really getting a lower price for goods? I suspect that is the only way that business is profitable. I watch very carefully to take a short position when the time is right.

      • philjourdan says:

Wages are based on value produced, not income needed. No company pays a “living wage”. They all pay at or below a “value wage”.

      • mjc says:

Ever wonder why what Walmart pays isn’t enough?

How about all the taxes, costs of regulations and all the other things that comprise a modern government?

All of those costs increase prices…which increases the cost of liviing.

The lack of culture is not a culture.

    • DEEBEE says:

But one has to marvel at a supposed minority of whites cowing a majority.

    • KTM says:

At our very diverse local high school, they have a “culture week”. They have an assembly featuring students performing ethnic dances, they have a fair featuring ethnic foods and art. There isn’t any “Western/White/American culture” to be found. Apparently it is not worth celebrating.

At our local university, there is a summer research program sponsored by SACNAS (Society for Advancement of Chicano and Native American Students). I spoke to a professor who had sponsored Native American students in the past through the program, and she explained how wonderful it was. She talked about the “cultural barriers” that so many Native Americans and Chicanos face that keep them from being more successful.

So we’re celebrating the cultures that are providing barriers to personal success, but the successful Western culture is to be dismissed and ignored.

  8. Robertv says:

  10. SMS says:

Rioting was never about social justice. It is about getting something for nothing. If you’re one of the first to break into Walmart; you get a flat screen TV and if you are one of the last you get the oversized clothes. What is happening in Ferguson is no different than the out of control rioting and looting that has been happening in the US for the past 50 years; an opportunity to get something for nothing.

Fifty years ago there was a massive migration of Blacks out of the south into New York. Why? Because the progressives in New York increased the benefits in their social programs so much it encouraged this migration. This largesse set of social programs was repeated in other major US cities and the migration repeated. A migration, not for jobs, but for progressive benefits.

Then we saw the progressives change how benefits were paid so that women were encouraged to have children out of wedlock. And the more children they had; the more the benefits. The benefits were greater if there was not father in the house. And as a result we now we have several generations of black/white males who have never had a father figure to guide them. Having no moral compass leads to an out of control society and the word “racism” just becomes an excuse for bad behavior.

These benefits were paid using our tax money but the real benefit went to the progressives who were guaranteed a significant voting block each first-Tuesday in November.

The Black vote has been bought off by the progressives at a high cost to our society. For this payoff the welfare recipients just had to give up their civility and independence of thought. If these groups were to ever sit down for a moment and do a “cause and effect” analysis; they might spit on FDR’s grave and turn away from the progressive movement; but free money drives the process.

    • “Cause and effect analysis”? This would require too much critical thinking.

    • cdquarles says:

SMS, the migration out of the South to the North began 100 years ago and it was mostly the result of the North having better job opportunities. It stopped 50 years ago, because the better job opportunities no longer were in the North, but somewhat to the West. The migration has been back to the South since, whether Black or White, because the better job opportunities are mostly in the South, the Dakota Shale boom excepted.

Sure, I’m sure that the better ‘welfare’ offered in the North kept some there and attracted some of the freeloaders away from the South; but that’s not why most of the Great Northern Migration took place, for that happened before ‘welfare’ became a paying ‘job’.

      • SMS says:

CD, This subject of racial migration to gain benefits in New York City was a major topic of discussion 40 or 50 years ago. Driving from Mississippi to Chicago to pick up a benefit check and then taking the train back was also occurring.

        • cdquarles says:

It might have been talked about, but the facts still are that the migration was going in the other direction by the 70s. The 60s I’ll concede, but not the 70s. They were talking about the ‘Rust Belt’ versus the Sun Belt then. I’ll also concede cheating and gaming; but the numbers of people you’re talking about would not be large.

    • Chip Bennett says:

If they prefer Shari’ya Law, then we advise them to go to those places where that’s the state law. Russia does not need minorities. Minorities need Russia, and we will not grant them special privileges, or try to change our laws to fit their desires, no matter how loud they yell ‘discrimination’. We better learn from the suicides of America, England, Holland and France, if we are to survive as a nation. The Russian customs and traditions are not compatible with the lack of culture or the primitive ways of most minorities. When this honorable legislative body thinks of creating new laws, it should have in mind the national interest first, observing that the minorities are not Russians.” — Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, addressing the Duma February 4th, 2013. What you forget is “You can take a boy out of Harlem (Nigeria or Zambia), but you cannot take Harlem out of the boy”

Nigerian Americans have long been known for their community’s intense cultural emphasis on education, and now an analysis of Census data coupled with several local surveys shows that Nigerians don’t just value education, but surpass all other U.S. ethnic groups when it comes to obtaining degrees….

“These are higher levels of educational attainment than were found in any other…community,” Stephen Klineberg, a sociologist at Rice University who conducts the annual Houston Area Survey, told the paper.

African immigrants obtain a diploma at a rate twice higher than U.S.-born White Americans and four times that when compared to African Americans….

A report on African Immigrants and Educational Attainment reveals the numbers in clear fashion:

African immigrants to the U.S. are among the most educated groups in the United States. Some 48.9 percent of all African immigrants hold a college diploma. This is more than double the rate of native-born white Americans, and nearly four times the rate of native-born African Americans. According to the 2000 Census, the rate of college diploma acquisition is highest among Egyptian Americans at 59.7 percent, followed closely by Nigerian Americans at 58.6 percent.

Interesting point Jimbo ! I guess the main difference between Europe and the US stands in immigration policy, you attract and choose the best people in the world, meanwhile as good humanists we accept almost everyone here. In fact in french universities PhD are massively obtained by strangers, so we benefit too from immigration, but on the other hand there are hundred of thousand people coming for state subsidies, and for a large part enter illegally on our land. As illegal immigrant you got money, free health insurance, and a place to live (mostly hotels, which cost large amount of money, given from hand to hand to the migrants so they can pay for their rooms, at least in some cases).

I hope it will change in the future, minds start to shift toward conservatism, socialism is declining but given our present socialist government it’s not surprising !

        • philjourdan says:

you attract and choose the best people in the world, meanwhile as good humanists we accept almost everyone here. In fact in french universities PhD are massively obtained by strangers

You seem to contradict yourself. I would say those getting PhDs (unless the French education system really sucks) are some of the “best” as well.

But you are also incorrect. We do attract the best and brightest – but also the poorest and most violent. There are hundreds of thousands (perhaps millions) of foreign students in the US. There are also 12-20 million illegals here who could not pass a remedial math course.

A few years ago, I returned to school. What I saw was a very large number of blacks hanging out in the cafeteria. Almost none in the classrooms. They want the rewards without having to do anything. I think that they believe that as a political group they can demand certain things with the hidden understanding of no wide spread violence. The only black in physics wasn’t from the US. The racial landscape of America is changing, and the charge of racism is growing thin when so many other races of color are not only doing well but thriving, intermarrying, and adopting. American blacks need to clean up their act. Regardless of what the American black community may believe, it doesn’t do them any good to show a picture of a cute 14 year old that has morphed into a gangster. It doesn’t do them any good to call an oversize thug a teenager or martyr. The irony is that they represent a very real threat to the black community and little or none to white communities. And they wonder why they live in food deserts.

  15. jdseanjd says:

Back in the 70s I was fitting new windows in the London (UK) suburbs, in privately owned houses, many of them black. Smashing people & great customers. Many times we had full dinners put up for us, hospitality never equalled by our equally polite & cheerful white customers.

Nothing wrong with these first generation immigrants.

Their social & religious training was obviously intact & effective. What’s the Jesuit saying ?
“Give me the boy ’till he’s 7 & I will give you the man” There’s a lot to that.

The rot set in with subsequent generations. My brothers & I went to mixed race schools, & for years worked on school maintenance in 200 schools SE & SW London. My wife has helped out at our local primary/ infants school for the last 19 years, & friends & neighbours are teachers.

I have seen at first hand the declining standards of both education & discipline over the last 40 years, & the growing & unsustainable levels of social dependency. This does not end well.

One reason why immigrants do so well is because, mostly, immigrants are among the best, brightest & bravest of their generation. My parents were both first generation Irish immigrants, using the employment opportunities presented in rebuilding this country post WWII.

The fault, IMO, lies entirely in the lap of the host country, most definitely not in the people.
“Progressive” policies, actually regressive in effect, resulting in poorer discipline & education, & massively more state dependency, are massively corrosive of Western competitive, capitalist, democratic society.

I will go so far as to say that society is now dead.

We now live in a post democratic society where govts are elected without majorities, politicians are bought by & subservient to vested interests & view their populace with contempt.

Competition has been driven out as commerce is concentrated into the hands of ever fewer corporations, capitalism has given way to crony corporatism.

I don’t think it’s an overstatement to say we now live in a post democratic, crony corporatist society, increasingly feudal & Fascist in character. The banksters who run things have always hated both democracy & competition. They minimise profits. And Power.

The banksters have been scheming to bring down America in particular, & bring the entire planet under their heel since 1st May 1776. Google that.
