The Improving Climate Of The Northeast US

People take for granted that the Northeast US is wet, because they don’t remember history. Prior to the mid-1970’s – the Northeast US was in drought most of the time. But droughts almost never happen there anymore.

I remember visiting my grandparents in New York during the summer of 1965, and they wouldn’t serve you water in restaurants.

Fortunately, there is no shortage of water or beer in Washington DC today.

Here in California, the pols fail to admit the drought is over It might take 20 years of wet winters for them to admit it’s over.

I’m having a Jack & Coke and was watching a short but pretty intense snow blow in sideways in 30 mph winds. Just a short burst of snow though the wind has been up over 20 mph all day gusting to at least 40 at times. One of those winds you can hear in any room on the windward side of the house as it blows through the trees. Freeze warning tonight for us in central Indiana. Kind of making me wish we hadn’t already cleaned the fireplace and put the stuff away for the season.

Rainfall is good. Here in Central Texas we have finally come out of the nasty drought that peaked in 2011. It took 4 years and several recent big floods to finally refill the area water storage reservoirs.

I’ll be quaffing a few real ales this evening. Cheers!

Hey oz! You probably already know this, but one of the big reasons why Texas has been low on annual rainfall is because they have had a fewer than usual number of hurricanes in the last decade or so. Of course the lower incidence of hurricanes is exactly the OPPOSITE of what the CAGW enthusiasts were predicting. “All that extra heat is extra energy in the atmosphere! We will have record setting hurricanes and storms!” Well, wrong again… not that they seem to learn from their errors.

If, in fact, we are now entering a cooling period, the fine people of Texas (of whom I was once a proud member for a few years) may find that the increased rainfall comes at the price of a return of some of those missing hurricanes.

I remember the 1960’s drought here in Maryland by the fantastically long drives (golf) you could hit on baked out courses, getting 100 yards or more of roll. But getting the ball to hold the greens was nearly impossible, so my scores still sucked.

    Steven says
“But droughts almost never happen there anymore”.

    Henry says
showing a linear graph for rainfall is like an ostrich putting his head in the sand.
    “Everything is fine”
    Unfortunately, the weather behaves non-linear.
Hence, rainfall patterns work like the pendulum of a clock, as shown here, as an example.

Hardly a dusting on the ground this morning though a little stuck on the deck. Despite the roads being clear a snow baby called off and work called to send me to pick up his load in Findlay, OH. As I was on the way in to start the run they changed their mind realizing that the load was not critical and they should save me for later. That’s the way it goes sometimes, especially on Sundays when less experienced dispatchers are calling the shots. Would not be surprised to be sent east along I-90 to MA because they are getting a few inches of the white stuff between Syracuse and Boston.

I checked all the US climate regions using the drought index. It’s interesting. Shows the different changes that have happened since we started recording rainfall/precip data.

What goes around seems to come around. Burning CO2 is a feeble explanation for everything wrong with the world.

Never liked that white nuckel sindrom ,roads were iced over twice last week at least every body has learned to drive again this year.if north east wyoming is get rain somebody else is getting shorted. Were about average at the moment.

  10. Farmer Frank says:

I have dozens of Tulips, hundreds of daffodils, a dozen different colors of crocuses, all gloriously blooming, my Mirabelle plum tree is blossoming for the first time in five years… My peach tree has huge pink and maroon blossoms, my Queen Ann’s Cherry is fully blossoming for the first time EVER…

    And it is…
    SNOWING F____ING SIDEWAYS!!!!!

Winds out of the NW at 40-50 mph, gusts to 60 mph, near white-out blizzard conditions. Temp has dropped from 47 to 32, just while we ate dinner…. Now they have dropped the weather forecasted-low temp for tonight, from saying 29 yesterday, to 27 this morning, to now they are saying 25 degrees….

Repeat after me: Warming is GOOD!!! Freezing SUCKS!!!
Freezing KILLS!!! Warming (and CO2) gives LIFE!!
