A Whacked Out View Of America

Many foreigners imagine that the US is a wild west shooting gallery, and nothing could be farther from the truth.

Most of the households here in Colorado own guns, and the thought of being shot never occurs to me. I have been hit by cars on my bicycle twice, and have close calls nearly every week.

Unless you live in an inner city controlled by gangs (where guns are illegal) your chances of being shot in the US are extremely low. The only shooting murder which has ever occurred in my neighborhood was done by the Fort Collins police.

On the other hand, bad drivers kill someone every 15 minutes in the US, and injure someone every few seconds. No one is talking about having a national registry to fingerprint drivers.

Thousands of times a day, doctors intentionally use medical instruments to end innocent human life.

Yes, and then there is car bombs.

Steve, you would be far more likely to be killed by a car now if the USA had not brought in measures to make cars safer over 40 years as a public health issue.

Your comment about “bad drivers” is the same the auto industry said all that time ago too so they did not have to do anything about the inherriently dangerous cars they were selling. Accidents were always the bad drivers fault, either they should be trained or removed from driving. Same argument put forward today by gun supporters. Bad people, train them or remove them.

Of course when driving there are bad drivers, but there are also people who make mistakes or misjudgments or have an illness that comes on etc etc, and when this happens cars are now more designed to make sure to help protect the people involved in the accident.

Compare that to the gun supporters who are now calling for mental health checks. Funny they should think it is again the person who is the issue. It’s a completely old fashioned view.
