In 2007, leading scientists in the US and UK predicted that the Arctic would be ice-free before the summer of 2013.
BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Arctic summers ice-free ‘by 2013?
Later, Obama’s science adviser announced that ice-free winters would follow shortly behind.
…if you lose the summer sea ice, there are phenomena that could lead you not so very long thereafter to lose the winter sea ice as well. And if you lose that sea ice year round, it’s going to mean drastic climatic change all over the hemisphere.
Tom Nelson: Complete barking madness from John Holdren, Obama’s science advisor
And now the Communist News Network has declared that the Arctic is indeed ice-free during winter 2013.
Video of CNN meteorologist is absolutely fabulous!
He never really did explain what this ‘phenomena’ would be that would cause the ice to melt in winter where it gets as cold as -40C.
The ice is melting in the summer due to a combination of warmer water and air temperatures. In winter it ices over but not as thick as before.
Your response is ridiculous. The claim related to an ice free winter, and did not discuss thickness. E.g., “The ice would be there, just not as thick.” If you want to debunk a claim please address the actual claim and not something else.
My response dealt with the objective evidence apart from that weatherman’s gaffe. I was in no way supporting his statement.
Here is a tip: if you want to disagree with something I’ve posted (which is fine, BTW) then address what I wrote about and not something else. Otherwise one assumes you are waffling.
Besides what you just said is wrong anyway (look at the data …fool)
Hey, if they are going to lie ( and they are ) they might as well make it a big one . The question I have is how many people are going to believe them ? Will it be the same percentage as voted for obama ?
I remember Steve saying that the Multi-year ice had doubled and even quadrupled since 2008. That is every bit as wrong as saying that it is currently open.
Is there no admission of one’s own mistakes?
If I argue with Steve over something I have the common courtesy to link to the data. Could you please do the same, rather than simply express your opinion that you think someone is wrong?
Stop lying and produce a link.
I produced the link in the post. And you did not follow-up. I therefore assumed you acknowledged you were wrong, if indirectly. Before accusing me of lying check your facts Steve.
I was responding to TI
I don’t know if you responded or not. I produced the link to the data and you accused me of lying just now by stating that I didn’t. Your response to the data set is not relevant to your accusation.
But anyway, I’m happy to look at your response. What was the topic heading again so I can find it?
Will I was not addressing you

Here is the quote from the thread, Shortest Arctic Melt Season On Record?
September 3, 2011 at 11:08 pm:
“You missed the part about MYI doubling over last year and quadrupling since 2008.”

OK, my apologies.
OK, I got mixed up as to who Steve was responding to. Let me try to straighten this out then…
To repeat, in the past if I disagree with a claim Steve has made I produce a link to a data set that supports my position.
Terra Incognita, do you have a data set of ice thickness trends you can point to, or are you just expressing opinions and accusations?
Nice job linking to the hacked web site not run by Steve.

@Will Nitschke
I simply said that Steve had made that statement and I provided the link above as you requested.
This is a ridiculous response. You are clearly objecting to Steve’s claims. On what *basis* do you make your assertion that he is wrong other than your opinion that in your mind he must be wrong?
@ Glacierman: “Nice job linking to the hacked web site not run by Steve.”
That is not hacked information I myself posted the comment that Steve responded to.
If 2013 doesn’t live up to expectations. Ice free will probably be redefined as any Sea ice less than 4 million km2. Will probably be claimed Ice free next time. 97% probability of unprecedented over exaggerated BS by Alarmist warmists.
Storms breaking up ice isn’t melting anyway. Along with wind or current shifts. Of course It’s alway claimed as melting ice due to GW!
The satelite sea ice measurements appear to be dodgy anyway. It appears to ignore large patches of sea ice which are still there at times and paints it in as open water!
It’s getting so that Pravda is a more trustworthy source of information.
‘Could be’ is not ‘would be’ It is dishonest to claim in the headline that the latter was said when in fact it was the former.
ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Anyway he was misquoted and obviously he meant 2103.
“Communist News Network” for CNN? That is just silly. CNN is just another American news network, selling the story that the American Big Money power elite wants it to sell.
You are certainly entitled to your own opinion.
selling the story that the American Big Money power elite wants it to sell…
Well that much is obvious..that it is the “Communist News Network” doing said work may take a little more paying attention to figure out 😉
And as pretty much every channel has the same news, I guess they would all be “Communist News Networks”….
