I made this post on December 26 :
Hottest Year Ever Update
Posted on December 26, 2012by stevengoddardNOAA is about to claim that 2012 was the hottest year ever in the US by a wide margin, but their data shows otherwise. If US temperatures average less than -2C for the rest of the year (which is quite likely) – then 1921 will remain the hottest year according to untampered GHCN HCN data.
Further research shows that NOAA never updated the temperatures for the last four days of December, so my December 2012 numbers are too high. I don’t know if this is enough to bring 2012 down below 1921/1934 or not. It will be close.
I don’t know what NOAA is up to. Many stations have January, 2013 data – but almost none have data for December 28-31. This data is critical because those days were very cold and the annual rankings were very close.
Just what are these people at NOAA being paid to do? They don’t finish the job but just move on to the next thing without regard to their duty!
Reblogged this on Climate Ponderings.

Dr. Robert E. Stevenson
SOME BASICS OF MARINE CLIMATOLOGY
“The atmosphere cannot warm until the underlying surface warms first. The lower atmosphere is transparent to direct solar radiation, preventing it from being significantly warmed by sunlight alone. The surface atmosphere thus gets its warmth in three ways: from direct contact with the oceans; from infrared radiation off the ocean surface; and, from the removal of latent heat from the ocean by evaporation. Consequently, the temperature of the lower atmosphere is largely determined by the temperature of the ocean.
The greenhouse radiation from the atmosphere affects only the top few millimeters of the ocean. Water just a few centimeters deep receives none of the direct effect of the infrared thermal energy from the atmosphere! Further, it is in those top few millimeters in which evaporation takes places. So whatever infrared energy may reach the ocean as a result of the greenhouse effect is soon dissipated.”
No (believe it or not):
“Dogma, Not Reason, Rules Today”
You miss the fact that the “greenhouse radiation” is based on the temperature of the radiating water. And, as such, the returning radiation for the -15 deg C upper troposphere is rejected/reflected by the water as those energy levels are already full.
There is no greenhouse effect as they claim and no gas of any kind can warm the surface, be it soil or water. The Laws of Thermodynamics hold firm and valid.
Of course, this is just the US and not for the whole world. The other vast, majority area had a very different experience.
“Many stations have January, 2013 data – but almost none have data for December 28-31. ”
Well do as the alarmists do with missing data – just make some up… err sorry — adjust it statistically based on your experience and a new vague theory.
I think -22 degrees for all three days is reasonable.
It was extremely cold that week in Colorado, and using Hansen’s 1200 km extrapolation I should be able to cover most of the country with a single thermometer.
Sounds reasonable (in a Hansen kinda way)
If you can only break a 91 year old record by a few silly hundreths of a degree, I am still not very impressed with “catastrophic warming”. It does not seem like the planet is spinning out of control.
