In order to determine if 2012 was the hottest year in the US, I need to see the temperatures for the last four days – which are missing. Many stations, Like Lemon Cove, CA have January 2013 data, but no data for December 28-31 2012. Less than 10% of the stations have Dec. 28-31 data listed. That looks very suspicious.
The reason these days are critical is because they were far below normal temperatures. As of November – 2012 was in the number three spot, but a warm first three weeks of December moved it up to #1. If the last four days were more than 10 degrees below normal, then 2012 would drop back to the #2 position.
Of course, any ranking here is based on the adjustments that they have made already, so, why care about how they misrepresent their misrepresentations?

It’s worse than you thought. They are missing entire cold months. I concur on the 4 day issue based on some sampling, but there are a few that I’ve sampled that quit in October 2012. Why go from the 1800’s and stop in 2012?. Some of these might not be hcn, I’m just grabbing some US stations. I should be able to process all of …/hcn tonight and report how many have missing days or months, except that I might have to let it run all night to get that much data.
See USC00011694 and USC00036174. Just a couple I randomly sampled. 2 of 3 are missing months. I’m going to have logic in place to flag such defects, but still it’s odd.
Virtually all of them in /hcn are missing the last 4 days. Many are missing December altogether, and some have big missing gaps in the middle of December too.
Amazing that NOAA can calculate an annual temperature with such precision – without even knowing what the daily temperatures were. They are very talented.

Well do as the CAGW crowd do with missing data – just make some up… err sorry — adjust it statistically based on your experience and a new vague theory.
I think -22 degrees for all four days is quite reasonable.
Or at least as reasonable as omitting the data.
So why do they tell us that 2012 was the hottest year in history if they don’t have all the data? They could at least round up the missing days and then give it a big enough upward ‘adjustment’ to make it fit their agenda. At least then the fraudulent record would be complete.
The climatological year is Dec through Nov. Not the calendar year.
That has nothing to do with this discussion. NOAA is referring to the calendar year.
