The left (led by Obama) wants to seize complete control of the US. The way they are trying to do it is to create one panic after another – global warming, guns etc.
Their goal is to convince you that unless you do exactly what they say, everything else is meaningless. Their hope is that you are so scared that you will be willing to throw away your rights, money and freedoms in order to survive their imaginary crises. They hope to convince you that anyone who disagrees with them is stupid, evil and threatens your children’s survival.

Progressives do not use fear as a ‘strategy’ any more than conservatives do. As someone who mixes in both circles I would make the observation that Progressives do assume they are an intellectual elite, smarter than those they wish to persuade. (Especially those who are not particularly bright. What they believe makes up for their own intellectual deficits.) It’s not clear to me why they are so certain of this, as their beliefs are typically governed by social, economic, political and scientific fads.
Progressives want you to fear each other and yourself, conservatives want you to fear the government.
Big difference.
