Until the massive drought in South Africa, my family farmed. Our cattle and horses were wiped out in the early 1920s by an outbreak opf a cattle disease, and the family were barely recovering from that when the drought hit in 1931 and by the time the rains came in late 1935/early 1936 it was too late. None of these morons know what they’re wittering about. The drought of the 1930s lasted well over 10 years in South Africa and changed the farming landscape permanently. The city I grew up in (I was bron in 1946) was still on water rationing until 1948. No, todays ‘Greens’ wouldn’t survive it.

The major cause of deaths and disaster from hurricanes and typhoons before ~1960/70 was the lack of warning. The hurricane that took out Galveston in 1900 is a good example. Quoting death or damage without noting the different situation today is not very useful for comparison of storm strength
The weather bureau gave Galveston residents more than 24 hours warning, and they ignored it just like they did for Ike in 2008 and obviously many places in the Philippines this week. The city of Galveston was completely destroyed – so enough BS.

What is different from today? The Weather Service warned of certain death in Ike, and few people left Galveston.
Obviously many people didn’t evacuate the shoreline in the Philippines.
I applaud his point about relative damage, not the point about warnings.
Indeed, on warnings, I am reminded of the massive efforts to get drinking water to the dumb$hits in New York after Sandy. They had a minimum of 3 days to prepare, and didn’t even stock up on drinking water. Some Darwin awards were called for.
Eli has a point. But how does one explain deaths due to the failure of individuals and governments to evacuate when there IS adequate warning? Katrina is a perfect example. People didn’t die because Katrina was especially intense, they died because local governments and individuals didn’t heed the warnings. Mayor Ray Nagin didn’t even follow New Orleans’ own evacuation plan.
Before the ~1960s / 70s people killed by hurricanes and typhoons were victims of natural phenomenon. Today they are victims of natural selection.

The real elephant in the room is thanks to advances in real science humanity recovers from these natural disasters better than ever before and reliable food production has increased markedly.
