   This year’s temps are obviously extremely cold — but that high temp in 1921 is astonishing! Any ideas about that? Is that a reliable data point? If so, it says a lot about fat tail distributions and weather variability.

   This appears to be a semi smoking gun that validates what I have been saying about National Airport’s significant warm bias. National is located approximately 20 miles south of Laurel. For the year, National has only averaged about -1C, while Laurel has been averaging around -3C. I don’t think there has been much of a north/south gradient with respect to temperature departure, certainly nowhere remotely that large.

   Also, it appears that there has been no warming at Laurel since the 1950’s. During the 1950’s, Laurel was a tiny rural town. Today it is a densely populated part of the DC/Baltimore suburban sprawl. Assuming the location has been contant, if you were to do any adjusting, it would be to cool the present and warm the past. Just the opposite of what they are doing!

   Back in the early 90’s I had a job just a few miles away from Laurel in Glen Burnie. I worked late every Friday night and had to take all the work orders and invoices from the week to the 24 hour Express Mail office at BWI airport on my way home to send to the main office.

   There were two Winters in a row back then where the temperature went down into the single digits at night in downtown Glen Burnie. By the time I drove to the airport just two or three miles away the air temperature would go down another five degrees, every time, to around zero.

   Now that same area where there was nothing but small auto repair garages, trees and wide open fields is a mass of airport parking lots, Arundel Mills Mall, thousands of new houses and Maryland Live Casino.

   This past Winter on one of the coldest nights I was out really late in that area and decided to see how low I could get my car’s thermometer to go by driving down that same road. The temperature went up one degree from downtown to the airport loop.

   Keep in mind that the official temperature for this entire area is recorded about 2000 feet away from that spot.

   My kid’s mother lives in Maryland and it was the first time her water pipe froze from the outside
