I thought it was Nixon that changed to speed limit to 55.
It was. Due to the OPEC embargo of 73. Carter mandated thermostat settings and Hours of operation for retail outlets (that went over like a lead balloon).
My father was Carter’s alternative energy advisor. He is the one who put the solar panels on the roof of the White House.
We DID have an ‘energy crisis’ due to Iran and other issues. Under Nixon, my dad was sent to Saudi Arabia to negotiate over oil issues, for example.
This is before energy giant Russia entered global energy markets! People don’t know how complex the energy markets are. Back when my father was advising Presidents about all this, we were moving rapidly from being one of the world’s biggest energy export powers to IMPORTING energy which is why we had sudden inflation,
Nixon fixed the deficits by cutting the gold standard and opening the doors to money printing by the Federal Reserve.
US oil imports have been real problems for our trade deficit which shot up after Nixon cut the gold standard. It peaked in 2004-2006 under Bush Jr. (GOP) at over 10 million barrels a day. It is now down to the level back in 2000 of 9 million barrels a day.
Many Americans are unaware of this huge inflow of oil. Due to political beliefs, are unable to see how all our Presidents have created this problem with car makers and others enabling this to happen, creating huge gas guzzlers.
Government interferes with the market in many ways which sends incorrect signals to companies and individuals which in turn results in bad decisions which is then used to justify more government interference.
Government ruins the money, interferes with the oil industry which brough us CAFE, and then CAFE resulted in people going to SUVs, etc and so forth… interferences, reactions, more interferences.
US natural gas imports peaked, again, in 2005, at 10 billion cubic feet per day. It has now declined to 5 billion cf today. Which is still immense. Despite all the fracting, it continues at a high level. Under Carter, we imported only 2 billion cubic feet. Which created more trade deficit problems.
It is only in the last three years that the rate of growth of energy imports actually began to seriously decline, again, due mainly to fracting here and high prices making people here in the north turn to firewood, as I have done. I used to burn gas, no more.
The 55mph NMSL was enacted by Nixon. At the same time the federal government changed how it counted fatalities. At the same time due to the oil crisis (also government caused) there was a reduction in driving, especially at night. The end result was a much lower number of fatalities. Because of this it was made permanent.
It has had a large number of bad effects over the decades. First, absurdly low speed limits reduce safety, every honest study shows this. Second, people started blocking the passing lane instead of keeping right except to pass. Third it allowed police to pull over anyone they felt like. If a driver wasn’t speeding he was ‘impeding traffic’. Most everything else springs from these, revenue, traffic jams, etc and so on.
Everyone speeds on highways and then slow down when cops appear. This is, like the CO2 tax, a fund raising system. Even the cops don’t drive 55 when possible!
Like pot smoking, it is illegal because this makes someone richer. And keeps the government busy confiscating property. Yes, get caught with pot and they steal your stuff.
