Our best minds hope to stop subsidence through cutting off our energy supply.
Florida Gov. Rick Scott has been mostly mum on the threat his state faces from sea level rise during this year’s gubernatorial race, but according to a Tampa Bay Times story, sea level rise could hit the governor a lot closer to home than he might think.
Gov. Scott’s beachfront property is in the path of sea level rise projections in the state, putting the governor in “one of the most vulnerable positions” in regards to rising waters, the Times reports. The governor’s $9.2 million Naples mansion sits about 200 feet away from the ocean and a foot above sea level, and the sea on his stretch of beach has risen about 8 or 9 inches over the last century.

The tide gauge at St. Petersburg shows a linear rate of “sea level rise” since the start of records 70 years ago. This is due to subsidence.
I’m not convinced yet that superstition and wildly self-destructive behavior by progressives can stop subsidence.
There sure are a lot of deniers in the real estate business.
The Dutch are behind this but it’s not what you think. They find a gullible mark on Progressive Internet forums and scare the bejesus out of her with these stories. Then they buy her land on the cheap, build dykes around it and flip it. The people running the stories for them are taking a cut.
I know this link below is about the Mississipi delta not Florida, but I’m always amazed how people build right next to water and then wonder why the land either subsides or is eroded away, and their house is destroyed. Maybe they believe Cher’s song “If I could turn back time”! Who exactly is living in Da Nile!!
“Without land-building deposits from the river, the delta is doomed to continue sinking beneath the water, endangering people, wildlife and jobs.”

I was, for a short time, flipping homes in the L.A. area. I looked at one home in Malibu right near the turn to Pepperdine where the building was less than 10 feet from the water.
It was a bargain because a storm had flooded the main floor. Actually, it didn’t look too bad, considering. But for Rick Scott in particular, Naples is a highly active hurricane zone. I know because I bought there too. But I went inland beyond the CAT 4 storm line.
That region averages one storm every couple years. It’s overdue.
The same thing is happening to the Colorado River. Morales Dam, south of Yuma, drains off the last of the river water. None of it goes to the Gulf of California. Tides are gradually wearing away the delta. You would think California would be concerned, but they use water in a desert environment like it was endless. Luckily for me, Yuma is 200 feet above sea level. El Centro is 32 feet below sea level. The Salton Sea is 200 feet below sea level. The unthinkable could be fact anytime now.
so, “if this trend continues”…….he’s not going to live another 150 years
Yep. At a relative rise of 2.86 mm/yr, he’ll have to move in 133 years.
And the governor can’t figure out how to protect his property from a nine inch change in sea level over the next 100 years?
But surely if we just tax enough and pass enough oppresive regulations we can stop the land from settling, right!
To show these things are always semi co-ordinated, as in everyone is on the same script at the same time, a similar story is running on Yahoo, from AFP, which is French news. Just about NASA, not Rick Scott.

BF Skinner’s Superstitious pigeons
“Skinner suggested that the pigeons behaved as if they were influencing the automatic mechanism with their “rituals” and that this experiment shed light on human behavior:
The experiment might be said to demonstrate a sort of superstition. The bird behaves as if there were a causal relation between its behavior and the presentation of food, although such a relation is lacking. There are many analogies in human behavior. Rituals for changing one’s fortune at cards are good examples.” – wikipedia
Alarmists believe their extra 1 molecule of CO2 in 10,000 molecules in the atmosphere is causing massive floods, hurricanes and tornadoes. Wouldn’t this also be the definition of “neurosis”?
Or psychosis!
Steve, you wrote “The tide gauge at St. Petersburg shows a linear rate of “sea level rise” since the start of records 70 years ago. This is due to subsidence.” Your graph shows about 2.5 mm/yr. rise, which is about the same for the World average:
http://sealevel.colorado.edu/content/map-sea-level-trends
If Tampa Bay shore was subsiding, it should show more than 2.5 mm/yr. shouldn’t it?
2.5 is not “about the same” as 3.2±0.4. In fact, it’s more than 10% less than the absolute minimum your sources give.
So if it is 2.5 mm while the average seal level is 3.2 mm, then the land isn’t subsiding, but rising, isn’t it? I wasn’t going to argue about a half mm per year, until you mentioned it.
That’s nice. Florida isn’t rising, though.
But still, are you saying you’ll put money on the referenced mansion in Florida being underwater during Rick Scott’s lifetime? Because the article you’re defending with your absurd numbers sure seems to imply that.
Bob McGenius, an accurate measure of sea level rise are the tide gauges in Hawaii, with no continental rebound, no sinking or uplifting. Sea level rise is 1.5 mm a year since 1800 because of warming when we came out of the Little Ice Age:
http://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/sltrends/sltrends_station.shtml?stnid=1612340
Satellite data is BS because the error bars a greater then the trend. Tide gauges on continents are BS because of glacial rebound…..which affects the upper latitudes as much as the lower. And you are full of BS because you keep arguing in favor of AGW, which by definition is BS
Rebound & subsidence from the former glaciers should basically cancel each other out if you have enough tide gauges in a wide enough bunch of locations to toss into the average. Of course, that all assumes that the density & mass & volume of the Earth are reasonably constant.
Personally, I think people like Barb Maginnis are simply paid to deny the fact that the Earth is getting larger.
Some of them are assigned minders.
Sea level rise is a Keynesian dream. If nothing else, it’s stimulus for sandbag stackers.
Sea level rose an astounding 2 feet in northern Japan in 2011. This had nothing to do with the earthquake.
Say what?
if the Governor wants to sell, I’m a buyer at 100k$ …
to me, that seems a really great deal for something that is surely going under …

“Superstition”
Very superstitious, writings on the wall,
Very superstitious, ladders bout’ to fall,
Thirteen month old baby, broke the lookin’ glass
Seven years of bad luck, the good things in your past
When you believe in things that you don’t understand,
Then you suffer,
Superstition ain’t the way
Very superstitious, wash your face and hands,
Rid me of the problem, do all that you can,
Keep me in a daydream, keep me goin’ strong,
You don’t wanna save me, sad is my song
When you believe in things that you don’t understand,
Then you suffer,
Superstition ain’t the way, yeh, yeh

I’m Maryland Steven now,
You moved! I hope you are more peaceful now, less scattered. But that’s the East Coast. Sort of. I had to look it up.
I’m still Colorado Wellington.
Oxfam just announced that we are all going to starve to death due to ‘climate change’. Meanwhile, grain futures traders in Chicago are causing prices to drop this summer due to OVERSUPPLY thanks to the possibility that there might be a warm el Nino.
They hope. Note, please, that warm=good. 🙂
It’s the damn commodity speculators!
Herr O’Reilly claimed that when prices went up. Not a peep when they go down.
no amount of science and technology will ever overcome fear and superstition
welcome to the world of CAGW!
