  1. Morgan says:

We need stricter knife laws like they had in China during the Shang Dynasty, 16th – 11th century BC, when people were not allowed to own knives, so they were forced to eat with chopsticks.

    • bubbagyro says:

I’m sure we have to have the permissive gun laws at UC campuses changed (/sarc).

    • Gail Combs says:

And then they stabbed a Chinese emperor with a sharpened chopstick.

That is why the Chinese use blunt tip chopsticks and the Japanese sharp tipped.

(Sorry I can not find a reference.)

  2. Truthseeker says:

    Steve,

For those of us not in the US, maybe a link to the original story would be nice? You sometimes need a little bit more than just the headline …

    • Dave N says:

Check Andy’s links, and/or use Google.

      • Truthseeker says:

How can I be sure that someone else’s links are relevant to what Steve is referring to, or that a Google search will point to Steve’s specific source?

        • Colorado Wellington says:

Exactly. Without the specific source, how can we determine if stricter gun laws could have prevented the stabbing?

    • Morgan says:

The story doesn’t matter. The headline is enough….gun laws don’t prevent stabbings, bombings, punchings, baseball battings, hammerings….

  3. Streetcred says:

Simple solution … enact laws to ban liberals from gun ownership. It hasn’t escaped notice that there is increasingly a problem with young mass murderers … the products of failed liberal education and social expriments, they’re all so ‘special’.

  4. Adam Gallon says:

It may have prevented the deaths of the 6 he shot afterwards.

    • People on mass murder sprees are always keen to follow the law.

It may have prevented the deaths of the 6 he shot afterwards.

A notably simplistic view held by many; represents the fallacy of straight-line extrapolation OUTSIDE known data boundaries. Should be recognized by any one of above average intelligence that the perp had multiple other ‘methods’ at his disposal t wreak harm on persons, as indeed he demonstrated …

      .

    • Colorado Wellington says:

This is a simplistic and superficial construction of a cause and effect relationship that ignores the obvious root cause.

Only stricter laws governing the societal role, sexual behavior and dress code of females would have prevented this tragedy.

The cause is identified precisely in the writings of this suffering young man. Why did you exclude it from your considerations and engaged in speculations instead?

    • Chip Bennett says:

Of course, the moment people with guns showed up to oppose him, the psychotic coward shot himself in the head.

      Like they all do.

      • gator69 says:

Colonel Grossman discusses this behavior and its link to violent video games. In a first person shooter game, when cornered the gamer can shoot himself to reset the game.

        • Bob Knows says:

I don’t believe all the stories that the perp “shot himself.” Its much too neat. Probably the pigs shot him and don’t want the paperwork of a trial. Judge, jury, and executioners on the street. Most people believe all their lies.

        • Colorado Wellington says:

Bob, the perps frequently shoot themselves when cornered or facing someone with a gun.

Also, why would the cops lie rather than take credit they stopped him without shooting someone else for a change?

Remember the California ex-cop manhunt and the two paper delivery ladies shot? The New York cases?

      • Colorado Wellington says:

Yes, shooting oneself when confronted by armed opponents is the other observable cause and effect. I wonder why Adam Gallon missed the most obvious connections.

    • Three died, same as the stabbings. Also, gun laws would not have helped the several more he ran down with his “gift from my mommie” BMW.

    • Gail Combs says:

The comments are interesting. And I agree it was no mistake. After all who the heck would have the information?

  5. gator69 says:

Yes, because after the better part of a century’s worth of super strict drug laws, we see that criminals can no longer acquire drugs.

  6. stpaulchuck says:

Aww come on guys, you know it was the evil voice of his BMW avatar that made him crazy. These foreign Devil Cars must be eliminated!!

  7. Joseph says:

I live in Los Angeles, which is about 2 hours south of Santa Barbara. Before hitting the gym yesterday I was watching this story on the local news station. The link can be found here:

    http://abc7.com/news/isla-vista-killing-spree-all-victims-identified/76775/

This is a sad story, but it’s an infuriating one. The police were notified of the suspect’s odd behavior and of his odd videos posted to YouTube about a month prior to this shooting, yet police did nothing (police deemed him “not a threat”). Please watch one of the victim’s father rant about how this is the NRA’s fault (5th video down on the link). This is what progressives think about mass shootings: if the NRA didn’t exist, this wouldn’t have happened. I can’t help but point out the fact that knives, cars, bats, hockey sticks, chain saws, clubs, nails, hammers, etc. can also be used to kill people, too.

I also saw some surveillance video at a liquor store during the shooting – couldn’t help but wonder what would have happened had someone been armed. What happened in Santa Barbara is the epitome of progressive/government (but I repeat myself) incompetence.

    • gator69 says:

Elliot Rodger was a Republican, and NRA member? Who knew? Guess I missed the Romney bumper sticker on his BMW.

      • Colorado Wellington says:

We don’t need to see the bumper stickers on his car to know these things. He closely followed the NRA mass shooting instruction manual that advises to kill the first 3 people with a knife to confuse the public.

    • Robertv says:

“couldn’t help but wonder what would have happened had someone been armed.”

He would have been shot by the police.

      • Joseph says:

The police that showed up after he had already shot and killed 7 people?

        • Colorado Wellington says:

The later they arrive the worse it may get and you don’t need to have gun to be shot by the police. Sometimes you get shot because you drive a truck and the police know the killer is driving a truck.

Remember the 2 newspaper delivery ladies shot by the police in the California killer ex-cop manhunt?

    • geran says:

Joseph, where can we buy the “smart pills” you are taking? I want to send some to our “Leaders”.

  8. Ron W says:

Or, if someone with a gun had stopped the crazed, criminal perp at the outset, we would’ve never heard about it. Such good news is not well tolerated by the national media.

  9. Sheldon says:

    School attacks in China (2010–12)
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_attacks_in_China_(2010%E2%80%9312)
“A series of uncoordinated mass stabbings, hammer attacks, and cleaver attacks in the People’s Republic of China began in March 2010. The spate of attacks left at least 25 dead and some 115 injured.”

Sounds to me like some knife, hammer, and cleaver control would be in order.

  10. Chip Bennett says:

    Gun laws? NRA? Politicians?

How about parents who failed to teach their son any sense of morality, or to provide him with any idea of the way in which the world works, thereby producing a narcissistic, misogynistic, jet-setting, selfish brat who thought the world owed him his desires on a silver platter, and that women owed him their affection merely due to his status as a rich brat? And, having thus failed their son, and having enabled in him the mental tendencies that led to his psychosis, those parents failed to accept the reality of their creation, or to force their son into the treatment that he obviously needed.

Rich, Hollywood progressives created in their son the inevitable progeny of progressive ideology, that exacerbated by Aspberger’s Syndrome developed into the perfect, tragic, deadly cauldron.

The family had all of the warning signs, and failed to act quickly, decisively, or insistently enough.

But, sure: go ahead and blame gun laws, the NRA, and politicians.

    • gator69 says:

      Parenting is indeed the answer…

“In July, 2000, a joint statement was made to the US Congress by the AMA, the APA, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. What they said was: “Well over 1,000 studies point overwhelmingly to a causal connection between media violence and aggressive behavior in some children.”

That’s all of our doctors, psychologists, pediatricians and child
psychiatrists telling the US Congress that media violence causes violence in children. Over a 1,000 studies have demonstrated that if you put media violence in a child’s life, you will get an increase in violent behavior. So far, though, no one has demonstrated the reverse: If we take media violence out of a child’s life, will violent behavior go down?

Now Stanford University has demonstrated exactly that. Less TV equals less violence. Earlier this year Stanford released a landmark study demonstrating a 50% decrease in verbal aggression, and a 40% decrease in physical aggression, just by encouraging kids to turn off their TVs and video games.”

      • Gail Combs says:

And who is behind the banning of spanking kids?

In Boston you could go to jail if you apply your hand to a kid’s rear-end and that was over 20 years ago. A couple I knew were threatened with legal action against them and gave up any type of discipline as a result. You do not need an actual ban all you need is Social workers with no brains or an agenda and a quota to meet.

Another friend went deeply into hock because a foster kid, a KNOWN troublemaker, accused her of horse whipping him. The other kids and other witnesses disagreed but since she had horses and therefore a lunge whip she was charged with child abuse.

You know, maybe if we could have a real, honest, adult discussion about keeping guns out of the hands of the mentally unstable, we could have a chance at preventing these sorts of things.

But I don’t think that conversation is possible in the current political climate, where this kid can fly under the radar for 22 years, and legally purchase the firearms he used in his killing spree – while someone once-prescribed an anti-depressant can have their second-amendment rights revoked indefinitely, and soldiers returning home from war can be indiscriminately diagnosed with PTSD (or inability to handle their financial affairs) and be similarly disenfranchised.

There’s simply too much danger that any efforts in this direction would be an opening for the left to abuse to further infringe on the rights of the law-abiding.

I don’t know what the answer is; but surely, somewhere along the line, a murderer such as this kid could have been identified as someone not mentally capable of owning firearms.

        • gator69 says:

The answers are as follows. More legal guns, more responsible parents, and less violence in our culture.

        • Gail Combs says:

Go ahead, continue to blame an inanimate object to hide the real problems.
          1. Poor discipline
          2. Lack of proper exercise
          3. Sugary drinks and sweets (vending machines) and carbs instead of high cost protein and fresh veggies for food. Some schools even ban meals from home.

How many of those kids then have to be forcible medicated by the school system because they can’t sit still? The current estimates are that between 6 and 7 million children are taking psychotropic drugs.

Violence in Schools? It’s the Prozac and Ritalin Stupid!

Edited by: William Wong ND, Ph.D., Member World Sports Medicine Hall of Fame.
          SIDE EFFECTS OF PROZAC
Please read these three pieces on exactly why we are having a level of violence in our schools and colleges that is unprecedented; and guess what? It’s not due to guns, it’s not due to music, it’s not even due to video games – it’s the Prozac and the SSRI family of drugs coupled with the amphetamine Ritalin. Look at the statistics, read the names of which student was taking what drug during their attack of mania…

WHY KIDS KILL? PROZAC AND ALTERNATIVES
          by Lawrence Wilson, MD
….Prozac, Luvox, Paxil, and Zoloft belong to a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRI’s. These drugs can induce akathisia – mental and physical agitation that sparks self-destructive, violent behavior. They can also induce dissociative reactions. The one taking the drug becomes insensitive to the consequences of his behavior.

The combination of these effects can lead to anti-social behavior of the worst kind. In one study, 6% of the children on Prozac became psychotic (1).

Here are the sad results. Eric Harris was on Luvox before taking part in the shooting at Columbine High School in April 1999. Fifteen-year-old Shawn Cooper fired on students and high school staff in Notus, Idaho in April 1999. He was taking an SSRI. Thirteen-year-old Chris Fetters of Iowa killed her favorite aunt. She was on Prozac. Kip Kinkel, a 15-year-old, first shot his parents, then killed two and wounded 22 fellow students at Thurston High School in Oregon. He was taking Prozac.
Joseph Wesbecker was on Prozac when he killed seven people at a printing plant in Kentucky, before taking his own life. In September 1999, Buford O’Neal Furrow, Jr. fired 70 rounds at the North Valley Jewish Community Center in Los Angeles wounding 5 people. A month earlier Mark Barton murdered his wife and two children and then methodically gunned down 21 people in two brokerage firms in Atlanta.

Jeff Weise was another school killer in Red lake, Minnesota. His dose of Prozac had just been increased to 60 mg daily. The story is the same – those involved were taking SSRI drugs. Since 1998, eight of the thirteen ‘school shooters’ were on psychiatric drugs. The records on the remaining five are sealed. Did the drugs cause the violence?

Ann Blake Tracy, PhD has studied Prozac for ten years. She researched 32 murder cases involving women and their children. In 24 of the cases, the women were taking Prozac or another SSRI.

    ===================

A discussion about keeping guns out of the hands of the mentally unstable will not keep guns out of the hands of the mentally unstable. Oh . . . an ADULT discussion. No, that won’t do it either.

Best bet: be armed and prepared to defend yourself and family and community from the mentally unstable with a gun. Or knife. Or box cutter.

Any adult in the U.S. who is not locked up can get a deadly weapon.

    • Chip Bennett says:

The NICS check will flag anyone adjudicated as mentally defective (provided that the States actually submit such adjudications to the system – something that too few actually do, or maintain).

Someone like Rodger legitimately could (and should) have been thus adjudicated, especially given his mental diagnosis, and having posted videos online indicating his intent to carry out such acts.

If he had been flagged by NICS, he would not have been successful in his attempt to purchase firearms legally.

        Chip,
AGAIN quit blaming an inanimate object!

Your forget that it was the PROGRESSIVES that emptied out the mental institutions and tossed those poor people on to the streets in the 1970s

It is no coincidence that the USA incarceration rate sky rocketed as a result. GRAPH

Since 2002, the United States has had the highest incarceration rate in the world. The U.S. rate is 500 prisoners per 100,000 residents. That is a 500% increase over the past thirty years. All the USA did was transfer people from mental institutions and county homes(for vagrants) to prisons. If you had ever bothered to talk to any street people you would have figured this out for yourself. Mentally stable does not describe many of those people. Lucky for us most are harmless and just die when the weather turns too cold.

        KENNEDY
Less than a month before his death, President John F. Kennedy signed the Community Mental Health Centers Act of 1963, which provided $150 million for new mental health center programs. Enactment of the act culminated Kennedy’s pursuit of reform of the national mental health system…. The study advised a new role for state hospitals as intensive treatment sites that would be much smaller in size, the article said. As president in 1963, Kennedy presented a special message to Congress that detailed the need for new mental health legislation. Kennedy stated that 600,000 people in private and public mental institutions at the time were affected by the harsh conditions of the institutions and hospitals on a daily basis. Kennedy argued that because of the benefits of new psychotropic drugs, people with mental illness could live in more natural community settings. Kennedy suggested Congress allocate funds to train more mental health professionals, to build more programs and facilities and to continue research. His goal was to reduce by 50 percent the number of patients in state mental hospitals in 10 to 20 years, according to Rochefort. As a result of Kennedy’s legislation, the number of patients in state mental hospitals declined by 62 percent by 1975….

        OBAMA
When President Obama took office in 2008, he reinvigorated the Justice Department’s efforts to crack down on states violating or failing to comply with the Supreme Court’s Olmstead decision. Additionally, his administration fast-tracked a package of amendments to the Americans with Disabilities Act that broadened its scope, allowing more citizens to claim protections by loosening the requirements of what constitutes a disability. The amendments went into effect in January 2009. Since then, the department’s Civil Rights Division has been aggressively investigating the mental health care systems of states nationwide. Officials have looked into at least 20 states and have negotiated settlements with many of them…
The agreements typically involve closing or significantly downsizing most or all of the state-run institutions in the jurisdiction in question and implementing a timeline by which to launch specific numbers and types of community programs and services….

2012 – Prisons See Surge in Mentally Ill

The number of mentally ill Marylanders jailed in state prisons has steadily increased in recent years, as the state has shrunk the number of patients in its psychiatric hospitals, officials say. Of the roughly 26,000 inmates in Maryland penitentiaries, about 4,200, or 16 percent, have been diagnosed with a mental illness, said Dr. James Holwager, director of Mental Health Services for the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services. That represents about a 5 percent jump from two years earlier, he said. The increase of the mentally ill in Maryland prisons mirrors a national trend and coincides with a decades-long push to move patients out of mental hospitals and into community-based care. Nationally, the percentage of mentally ill in prisons has grown from about 5 percent about 25 years ago to closer to 20 percent today…

“Killer’s family tried to intervene before rampage”
    http://news.yahoo.com/killers-family-tried-intervene-rampage-073702315.html

    Excerpts:
    – – – – – – – – – – –

GOLETA, Calif. (AP) — It was Friday night when Elliot Rodger’s mother got a call from her son’s therapist that he had emailed a ranting manifesto about going on a deadly rampage.

The mother went to her son’s YouTube channel and found the video in which he threatens to kill people. She alerted authorities and set off frantically with her ex-husband to Santa Barbara.

By the time they arrived, it was too late: their son had killed six people and then, authorities say, himself.

Doris A. Fuller, executive director of the Virginia-based Treatment Advocacy Center, said California law has provisions that permit emergency psychiatric evaluations of individuals who pose a serious threat, but that was never triggered.

Rodger’s family has disclosed their son was under the care of therapists.

He posted at least 22 YouTube videos. He wrote in his manifesto that he uploaded most of his videos in the week leading up to April 26, when he originally planned to carry out his attacks. He postponed his plan after catching a cold.

“On the week leading up to date I set for the Day of Retribution, I uploaded several videos onto YouTube in order to express my views and feelings to the world, though I don’t plan on uploading my ultimate video until minutes before the attack, because on that video I will talk about exactly why I’m doing this,” Rodger wrote.

In the final video posted Friday, he sits in a black BMW in sunset light and appears to be acting out scripted lines and planned laughs.

The rampage played out largely as he sketched it in public postings. He said he would start by “silently killing as many people as I can around Isla Vista by luring them into my apartment through some form of trickery.” He said he would knock them out with a hammer, and slit their throats.

On Sunday, the sheriff’s office identified the final victims as Cheng Yuan Hong, 20, and George Chen, 19 — both from San Jose — and Weihan Wang, 20, of Fremont. Hong and Chen were listed on the lease as Rodger’s roommates. Investigators were trying to determine whether Wang was a roommate or was visiting the apartment.

Around 9:30 p.m., the shooting rampage began and lasted about 10 minutes.

In the end, he shot and killed three others at random, and injured 13 more either with gunshots or the BMW that he used as a battering ram against bicyclists and skateboarders.
