Scare Pollution: Why and How to Fix the EPA

Steve Milloy has just released a very timely new book, with lots of good ideas how to drain the EPA swamp.

Scare Pollution: Why and How to Fix the EPA

Steve is a good friend of mine. Nobody has done more to set the record straight about green fraud.

Damn! Too late for stocking stuffers this year. I wonder how many copies Trump will receive from The Deplorables.

  2. R2Dtoo says:

You choose your friends well. Thanks for all you do. Hopefully Trump won’t let you down and your efforts towards truth will be rewarded. Have a very Merry Christmas. From Canada, where we are not thanking you for the Colorado Low that is hammering us right now! Winds 40-60km, 30-40cm snow, zero visibility and -20C: I have come to the conclusion that the dumbest person in the world is a Canadian against a bit of warming. Best always Richard

    • Colorado Wellington says:

What, Colorado Low? Richard, everyone knows it’s always been called Alberta Clipper!

Besides, I’ve been upbeat and friendly since the election to all depressed local leftists. I offer them sweets, I console them, I informally counsel them on Canadian immigration law, I assure them we won’t die of global warming till at least mid-2017, I offer them shooting lessons, I send them to prepper sites—I do it all.

How about giving me some credit? How about Colorado High?

      • Gail Combs says:

        Hey, Colorado
I can lend you a cute little pony for the Progressives to hug. I have two young unbroken ponies that need handling…

        • Colorado Wellington says:

Thanks, Gail! I have plenty of crayons and I was planning to get more stuffed toys but your lively ponies would be much better. These people are in serious pain and need something else to focus on.

          • Gail Combs says:

Your right Colorado, they need something else to focus on like a kick in the rear and my ponies can deliver!

  3. Eric Simpson says:

NONE of their scare-mongering predictions have ever come true:
“Entire nations could be wiped off the face of the Earth by rising sea levels if the global warming trend is not reversed by the year 2000.” -Noel Brown, ex UNEP Director, 1989
“A billion people could die from global warming by 2020.” -John Holdren, Obama’s current Science Czar, 1986 http://spectator.org/blog/17695/dr-doom
“[inaction will cause] … by the turn of the century [2000], an ecological catastrophe which will witness devastation as complete, as irreversible as any nuclear holocaust.” -Mustafa Tolba, 1982, former Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program
“European cities will be plunged beneath rising seas as Britain is plunged into a Siberian climate by 2020.” -Paul Harris, 2004, UK Ecojournalist

    Their EXPLICIT calls for deception:
“It doesn’t matter what is true, it only matters what people believe is true.” -Paul Watson, Greenpeace
“We have to offer up scary scenarios… each of us has to decide the right balance between being effective and being honest.” -Stephen Schneider, lead IPCC author, 1989
“Unless we announce disasters no one will listen.” -Sir John Houghton, first ipcc chair
“The only way to get our society to truly change is to frighten people with the possibility of a catastrophe.” -Daniel Botkin, ex Chair of Environmental Studies, UCSB

What the leftist loons really want:
“We have wished, we ecofreaks, for a disaster… to bomb us into the stone age, where we might live like Indians.” -Stewart Brand, Whole Earth Catalogue
“Isn’t the only hope for the planet that the industrialized civilizations collapse. Isn’t it our responsibility to bring that about?” -ex UNEP Director Maurice Strong
“A massive campaign must be launched to de-develop the United States.” -John Holdren, 1973
“We’ve got to ride the global warming issue. Even if the theory of global warming is wrong, we will be doing the right thing.” -leftist Senator Tim Wirth, 1993

    • CheshireRed says:

+1. Always worth a refresher to remind ourselves (and those still not onside) what the true nature of the Green Blob is all about. Those quotes will one day be part of the epitaph of the global warming LIE.

      • Gail Combs says:

Yes, It was never about the environment.
“….to bomb us into the stone age, where we might live like Indians.” -Stewart Brand —
        Yeah, RIGHTTttt.
He probably wouldn’t last a year if he had to really make do for himself with stone tools, a flint fire starter, clay containers and woven-weed baskets.

This is what the Progressives really want (And don’t tell you) and guess who gets to live in the modern city?

    • For more than a generation most of the so call “First World” countries have been ruled by elitists who run things to suit themselves………………….what happens to the “Little People” is of no importance. Here in the USA we have sham elections that allow us to choose between two sets of elitists knowing that nothing will change regardless of which party wins.

Then something went wrong and a populist overcame implacable hostility from both political parties, the “Media”, academia, big business, the trade unions, the Pope and many more.

Let us hope that Trump’s movement turns into a world wide phenomenon so that stupid government becomes a distant memory for most people.

      • John F Hultquist says:

The Pope is all they have now. We can’t vote him out because he is the dictator of his own little country.

However, he is getting push-back from his own:
Knights of Malta to pope: Stay out of our internal affairs

        • annieoakley says:

It is about time someone pushed back against this Pope.

          • Gail Combs says:

Yes, I can not stand him. There was some skuttle- butt about Pope Benedict being forcefully made to resign but I did not keep the links.

Venezuelan Archbishops have a Message for Pope Francis on Communism
“In a refreshingly powerful and direct statement, Venezuela’s bishops Monday blamed “Marxist socialism” and “communism” by name for the horrors and chaos gripping their country…”

          • gator69 says:

Benedict was a problem for TPTB…

“Wherever politics tries to be redemptive, it is promising too much. Where it wishes to do the work of God, it becomes not divine, but demonic.”
            -Pope Benedict XVI

          • Gail Combs says:

Gator, that was real obvious just by his politically out-spoken successor. Since I’m not Catholic I wasn’t really paying much attention and even I smelled a (commie) rat.

          • Gator nails it as usual.

          • Colorado Wellington says:

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

Pope Benedict and C.S. Lewis understood the divine truths.

  4. Steve’s expertise is in the statistical abuses and mechanics of poor regulatory decisions, and the operational aspects of Big Green. Yours is in dismantling the false advertising done by the marketing department, which spans government, media, and academia, and exposing the virulent corruption government funding has on climate science. Nobody has done more in this area than Steve Goddard.

    • Gail Combs says:

Which is why there is now a fight to brand this website as ‘Fake News’ by Word Unimpressed so they can block everyone from posting the URL to other sites.

      • Seriously? I thought WordPress wasn’t participating in censorship… I suppose anyone could choose not to post from certain domains, but how does it work, and how is WordPress involved?

        • cdquarles says:

Through abuse of spam reporting and other features.

I am glad someone brought up the George Orwell quote about newspapers. The same is, and has been, true of radio and television news.

  5. dennisambler says:

Junkscience and Realclimatescience I visit daily, for common sense and reality.

Check out this from 2011, when Lisa Jackson was EPA head:

“The United (Nations) States Environmental Protection Agency”
    http://scienceandpublicpolicy.org/science-papers/originals/the-un-states-epa

“In view of the rejection by the EPA of challenges to their endangerment finding, why would we be surprised to find that they have a long-term stake in the IPCC’s climate models and in the continuance of the IPCC itself.”

    and this from 2012:

“Lisa P Jackson, EPA Administrator – Fulfilling the UN Mission”
    http://scienceandpublicpolicy.org/science-papers/originals/lisa-p-jackson-epa-administrator-fulfilling-the-un-mission

“Lisa Jackson spoke at the 2009 Power Shift Rally and was introduced as “one of us” and a “scientist bringing back science to the EPA”. She paid homage to the Power Shift movement, saying that she was excited by its impact in bringing about social change:
“African Americans and women got the vote because of a power shift. We have the first African American head of the EPA and the first African American President; we have changed the face of environmentalism.

We have a $10.5 billion budget, the largest in EPA history, that’s a power shift, EPA is back on the job. (cheers, yelling).

Science has been resurrected and will guide our actions.”

The Power Shift organisation is anti-oil, anti-natural gas, anti-coal and describes itself
as a grassroots organisation and the hub of the Youth Climate Movement.

She made a call for youth action, saying that “EPA needs Power Shift and the Obama EPA is with you.”

The new Administrator also promised the (2009) crowd, that she would seek to overturn the Bush administration “midnight regulations”. The most critical of these to the environmental lobby was the memorandum by outgoing EPA chief Stephen Johnson, which stated that carbon dioxide was not a pollutant to be regulated and officials assessing applications by utilities to build new coal-fired power plants could not consider their greenhouse gas output when approving power plants.

Jackson also revealed the administration’s pre-determined policy on CO2, when she said that:

“Our first steps on taking office were to resume the CO2 endangerment finding and to seek fuel efficiency standards to reduce carbon pollution. The Law says Greenhouse Gases are pollution.”

    • annieoakley says:

The EPA is a criminal cabal. It exists only to persecute citizens and business, destroying the right to private property along the way.

      • PeeDee says:

To be more correct (I worked in the EPA during its first five years), the EPA was composed of administrators, lawyers, scientists and technicians who Drained the Swamp, but then was taken over by political mafia middle managers, and a NeoFascist Cabal of Krugmanesque Job-for-Lifers, the first PhD graduates with the Green Degrees.

My career boomeranged back to the EPA 30 years later, and yes indeed, it had become a festering polluted Techno-Facist arm of the NeoLiberal Empire, still with a few oldtimer hangers-on, shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

So we drank some beers, told some war stories about lakes on fire, and smog blotting out the sun, and teratogenically toxic single-point discharges in the 1000s of TONs, you know, the good old days, then we tipped the waitress and we all retired. My favorite tale to tell was the watch dial radium dumped in the Chicago Ship Canal, how it made the water glow green at night, so beautiful, like an industrial aurora borealis.

    • I expecting Trump administration to eliminate many of the four letter agencies and a few of the three letter ones (e.g. the EPA).

I also expect the top management of all the three letter agencies that survive to be replaced by people who are professional rather than political.

Maybe this is unrealistic but one can dream…………………

      • PeeDee says:

Remember, Obama appointed Panetta on the premise of auditing the Pentagon for the first time ever, but by the time Panetta bugged out, the Pentagon had ‘lost track of’ (they say) $6,000,000,000,000 Amero-bucks, more than six times the 2008 TOXIC MORTGAGE scam on Wall Street. Nothing. No outcry. Now Trump wants to make the Pentagon YUUGE. There is only One Party on Mil.Gov.Fed, a Supreme Soviet that outlasts, and ignores, every new administration, of whatever party stripe. “We will bury you!” And they did. 1,000 Generals and 1,000 Admirals, each making $250,000 for life, whether they have a duty station, or just a tee-off time.

  6. annieoakley says:

And while this is not EPA exactly, it is what all these agencies now believe they are able to do to regular people.
    http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-12-27/government-destroys-couples-rights-over-rainwater-if-youre-honest-they-take-it all.

  7. mariodbiq says:

the EPA is near-criminal enterprise. in but one well-documented example, they allowed the city of marco island florida to dump toxic effluent onto lawns, into the gulf of mexico, onto streets. asbestos laden pipes were being pulverized releasing the asbestos dust into the city. as people were getting sick, the EPA lied and obfuscated until a FOIA suit forced their hand – by then it was too late. see http://marcoislandblog.blogspot.com/

  8. Andy DC says:

With Trump as president and a Republican lead House and Senate, there is absolutely no excuse not to set the record straight on “climate change”. Also purge the various Government agencies of the corrupt political hacks that have promoted this scam and forced their lies down the throats of the American people.

    • There is no need for the new administration to set the record straight on climate change. All they need to do is adopt the budgeting practices that rule in the private sector.

In the private sector there is no “Continuation Budget”. Each year, every department has to build a budget from the bottom up justifying every expenditure in terms of the benefits that will result. This is called “Zero Based Budgeting”.

The effect on government will be truly transformational…………..organizations such as GISS, the EPA, the Department of Education, the Department of Energy and the Department of Agriculture will shrink dramatically or disappear altogether.

      • annieoakley says:

Disappear is what I pray will happen to all of them.

      • Gail Combs says:

This is called “Zero Based Budgeting”.

A man after my own heart!!!!

“Zero Based Budgeting” really really cuts out the fat. I had to go through that every year when I ran a lab and boy can it be murder if you don’t have a reason for EVERYTHING.

Try getting an accountant to understand Why you want a Gas Chromatograph for the first time in company history for example…

        • If there is a “Magic Bullet” for over reaching government it is “Zero Based Budgeting”.

Remember Ronald Reagan who reshaped America by firing the air traffic controllers who refused to honor their contracts?

Look for Donald Trump to do something similar or even multiple things of similar impact. Suppose for example he decided to eliminate the corn for ethanol subsidies that favor Archer Daniels Midland and other mega agri-businesses.

The effect would be global as the spike in corn prices that was a factor in the “Arab Spring” would be reversed.

        • One of my laboratories requested test equipment needed to simulate lightning strikes. When my boss reduced my capital budget I decided those items were the lowest priority and deferred them by a year.

With hind sight this turned out to be a bad decision that cost the company several millions of dollars while saving only $30,000.

          • Gail Combs says:

G.C. It is really tough to put into words the gut feeling you have that something is really important. esp when you do not have the something so you can prove it is important.

            20-20 hindsight in action.

      • cdquarles says:

I am an old man and I might be misremembering, but zero-based budgeting and impoundment during the Nixon administration (one of the few good things done by him) helped his enemies during Watergate and our political enemies after Watergate. The Congress after his resignation changed the law (or just before it, like I said, I’m going from memory) to require his and subsequent administrations to spend every penny authorized and allocated for expenditure by Congress. Even Reagan had trouble and wanted a line-item veto to trim allocations since he could not violate the law requiring spending, especially end-of-year spending that was including in Jimmy Carter’s era baseline budgeting (and even then Congress would more often than not fail to pass the budget bills).

Get rid of baseline budgeting and allow impoundment (temporarily, maybe, until Congress and the President work it out) plus simple end of automatic COLAs for bureaucrats (merit bonuses are a different thing, with merit based on visibly meritorious performance, primarily reducing spending) and the budget will balance itself through economic growth. Taxes are paid in nominal dollars, let us not forget. [NB, as long as the US dollar is petroleum (plus a bit of gold/silver, these being IMF SDRs) backed and is the world’s reserve currency, we *must* export dollars as a capital good.]

      • PeeDee says:

That’s hope and chains talk. City, County and State budgets are all zero budgets with rollover minutes and rainy day funds. Our State administrator bought me a walnut desk to make his numbers. The mantra: Use it or lose it. Grow or die. Now multiply that grift by 10,000s of CCS and Fed agencies, all with their blood tubes shoved deep into the US taxpayer, and a new president now promising to grow government and “public-private partnersips” (sic) moar YUUGE. EPA is just a symptom of the Stage 5 metastatic condition of America, the most bankrupt nation in all of human history, about to burn through your SS and MC trust funds, then privatize those too.

  9. Andyj says:

Not a lot of people know this. The EPA gave the owner of New Yorks World trade centre three weeks to clean up the loose asbestos that supposedly protected the exposed steel work inside the buildings. The steel was rusting and it was coming loose. A documentary on this was shown on British TV.
    So he sold it.
Then three weeks later, 9-11 happened.

Can anyone tell me what was all that white stuff and what lung issues are all those people suffering from these days?

    • cdquarles says:

My memory is that it was grey stuff and was powdered concrete, silica, asbestos and several thousand other chemicals, including the products of combustion of various metals, plastics, fuels, and et cetera.

    • PeeDee says:

Confirm quite easily with original construction document archives, and that use of asbestos was standard practice at that time, but there are more questions. Why were only 3,000 people at work in the 8,600,000 square feet towers? 1000 square feet is a mighty big cubicle. Where were all the desks and chairs and dividers and water coolers? Where were all the miles of metal conduit and kilotons of copper wire? How did a fuel explosion at the top of the building shatter 6″ thick steel massive columns into individual pieces with det-cord cut marks? Entire floors were empty. Entire offices abandoned. No crime scene. All evidence hauled off and sold. Molten steel 1000s of degrees white hot underground. Complicit EPA saying all is safe.
And $2,300,000,000,000 already missing in action at the Pentagon.

  10. Dan Pangburn says:

As though it was not bad enough that political bias drives research funding, a fundamental assertion by EPA results from a mistake in logic.

    EPA Mistake

The EPA erroneously asserts Global Warming Potential (GWP) is a measure of “effects on the Earth’s warming” with “Two key ways in which these [ghg] gases differ from each other are their ability to absorb energy (their “radiative efficiency”), and how long they stay in the atmosphere (also known as their “lifetime”).” https://www3.epa.gov/climatechange/ghgemissions/gwps.html

The EPA calculation of the GWP of a ghg erroneously overlooks the fact that any effect the ghg might have on temperature is also integrated over the “lifetime” of the gas in the atmosphere so the duration in the atmosphere ‘cancels out’. Therefore GWP, as calculated by the EPA, egregiously miscalculates the influence on average global temperature of greenhouse gases. The influence (forcing) of a ghg cannot be more than determined by its concentration.

The influence on average global temperature of a ghg molecule depends on how many different wavelengths of EMR the molecule can absorb/emit. Water vapor molecules can each absorb/emit at least 170 different wavelengths in the wavelength range of terrestrial radiation (p 499 of http://articles.adsabs.harvard.edu//full/1938ApJ….87..497E/0000499.000.html ) compared to only one for CO2. There are about 30 times more WV molecules in the sea level atmosphere so it is at least 170 x 30 = 5100 times more likely that EMR absorbed by CO2 and thermalized will be reverse-thermalized to water vapor.

Thermalization of all absorbed radiation and the complete dominance of water vapor in reverse-thermalization explain why CO2 has no significant effect on climate. Terrestrial EMR absorbed by CO2 is effectively rerouted to space via water vapor with the result that CO2 has no significant effect on climate. http://www.climatedepot.com/2016/12/20/study-solar-activity-oceans-cycles-water-vapor-explain-98-of-climate-change-since-1900-not-co2/

Identification of the three factors, in an equation which matches average global temperature (98% 1895-2015), is at http://globalclimatedrivers2.blogspot.com

On the main subject of attack in this book, here’s the UK expert report on how particulate air pollution causes cardiovascular problems.

    https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/304668/COMEAP_cardiovascular_disease_and_air_pollution.pdf

    It specifically covers
Epidemiological evidence for an association between air pollutants and
    cardiovascular disease – short-term studies, long-term studies

Potential mechanisms underlying the cardiovascular effects of air pollutants

These are reputable medical experts – you pick who you believe.

    • gator69 says:

      Strawman alert! (Moron alert too)

What does this tunnel visioned study have to do with reining in the EPA? We already have laws that drastically reduce pollution, laws that have given us cleaner air than we have known for over a century. (Griff’s “study” actually discovered that smoking is bad for you!)

Griff, CO2 is not a pollutant, and tha EPA is trying to claim that it is, in order to push a leftist’s wet dream of an agenda.

Griff, you are incapable of learning anything useful. It’s not your fault, most of us here believe you have a mental disorder whose telltale symptom is wanting CAGW to be real. Seek help.

      • Colorado Wellington says:

It’s reasonable to deduce from Griff’s writing that she enjoys the thought of bad things happening to her. If true then the likely diagnosis is passive suicidal ideation, meaning she wouldn’t mind to die but she’d only take indirect actions, unlike other hysterical lunatics who actually commit murder-suicides because they are afraid of bad weather.

I wish Griff would try to educate herself and snap out of it but at this advanced stage I am skeptical she can, even with professional help. Many Progressive sufferers try joining support groups like the People’s Climate March, for example, but mental health authorities strongly advise against it, because Griff would meet other psychologically disturbed people who would only reinforce her lunacies. They would delude each other their misery and suicidal thoughts are normal and that’s the last thing she needs.

It would be better if she got a puppy and learned to take care of it.

Overcoming climate depression: why I’m joining the People’s Climate March
by Katrina Rabeler on September 17, 2014

Is climate change-induced depression real? I’m not sure if it’s on the books yet, but I spent nearly a year slowly overcoming the severe depression and anxiety into which attending a climate change conference propelled me.

Maybe I dove in too deep, too fast: I started reading all of the apocalyptic predictions; learned about the “carbon bubble” (fossil fuel corporations have access to five times as much fossil fuel material than the amount climatologists say is safe to burn); realized that we’re now talking about “adapting” to global warming, not simply “mitigating” its effects; heard women tell stories of their homes in the Amazon being destroyed due to oil drilling; and met climate refugees eye to eye. Once an optimistic person, I felt deadened—hopeless, and even more helpless.
