Even Greenpeace, PETA and other environmentalists were unusually silent

We are caught between the belief in free enterprise and the need for common sense regulation. Free enterprise brought a lot of people to the Southwest, attracted by the clean air and multiseasonal sunshine. When I was a youth in New Mexico, I could walk out the backdoor and walk 100 yds and be in a desert that stretched 100s of miles in front of me. Now there are houses there. There was a time when they thought we needed transcontinental fiber optics. They laid down about 50 x as much as we actually need. How many AI centers do we really need? Maybe determine that and have a lottery for the construction and ownership with requirements to share with other companies, and designate the appropriate locations.
I think the ” need ” for AI is not determined by need,
but by the competition with China (How many nuclear war heads do we really need?Why do you need to land men on the moon)
and that’s why high end chip sanctions were put into place etc.
Thus the massive involvement.
It seems to be unknown what the upper ceiling of Ai may actually be and at which point it does no longer make sense to invest.
But as of now the motivation seems not to be ROI but win the race .
I live in Alberta where there is a lot of natural gas and a lot of water which is available but unallocated. Something we do not have is fresh fruit and vegetables. With the heat available from a modest 500 MW server farm and the accompanying power station, we could heat several square miles of greenhouses all year – even at -40 degrees. At present only 14% of our fresh fruit and vegetables are grown in Alberta. The rest are imported from California and Mexico. With just one server farm, we could supply the whole of Western Canada and stop importing food from unreliable neighbours. Th economics of this are very good: see tinyurl.com/52xat5sc and read a proposal to heat just 4 square miles of modern greenhouses using off the shelf technology from Holland. This is by no means the limit of the heat available, it is only the easiest part. Such a facility integrated into the server farm with CO2 from the power station would make a profit of almost $6 billion per year and directly employ 22,000 people.
To build a server farm somewhere hot and try to cool it is silly. That’s bad engineering. Put it somewhere that needs the heat and grow needed food. There is so much heat available what we could grow oranges and pawpaw year round. Bananas, strawberries and all manner of things like triple-cropped wheat, mangoes and spices. The server farm makes money on its own. All we want is the free heat from it. After all, they are throwing it away.
A further activity is using excess CO2 from the power station to make autoclaved bricks and blocks. In our proposal this only makes a measly additional $ million but it is a demonstration of how to think about integrated economic and agricultural development in a world where AI and mass storage are increasingly featured. \
META plans to build an $11 billion server farm in Sturgeon County. It’s huge. The province should only allow this if they feed the wasted heat to 8 or 10 square miles of greenhouses. Alternatively, place each server bundle inside individual greenhouses and spread them out over a few thousand acres. The economics of greenhouses change dramatically when you barely pay for thermal energy.

I like your idea, and it has some side benefits: Trump would never allow Canada to have control of all that AI, so he would have to induct Canada into the US as the 51, 52, and 53 state, or for Obama fans the 61,62, and 63 state, making sure to divide the state lines such that two of them are red, and all the blue is lumped into the other. That and getting Denmark, along with its territories to become a US protectorate, wouls seal the deal. If all of these countries can be seduced into socialist states, the same kine of propaganda tools could be used to move them toward capitalism. There are enough just plain stupid people in every country to allow the countries to be driven toward whichever political inclination you desire.

Minneapolis has made the news that they just had 10 days in a row of 90 or above temperatures which is the third most of all time. out of those 10 days four of them hit only 90, not upper 90s. or did they? weather underground says Minneapolis only had six days in a row of 90. why the discrepancy? I don’t know. fyi, 90 is not that unusual for a summer temperature, the average high temperature right now in Minneapolis is 84. bottom line I guess we have to quit using fossil fuels because it might hit 97 in Madrid Spain at the peak of Summer heat. or…. continue to use those fossil fuels but just pay more in taxes. apparently either one satisfies the bureaucrats and left of center politicians

I have noticed the same thing in the Dakotas. huge wind farms that often don’t move. because there’s no wind. but often there’s a lot of wind… and the wind doesn’t move them also because if the wind is over 25 miles per hour they shut down. also if the temperature is below 25 below they also shut down. so when you need them the most they’re shut down… and get this they have to be heated at that point. so at 25 below which is common in the upper Midwest in January, the windmills not only are not producing electricity they’re drawing electricity. but thank goodness in the desert of Portugal and the desert in southwest United States had a temperature of 120 for 10 minutes, and we can crow about that to our grandchildren for decades…. as my dad told me the tales of the harsh Winters and Summers of 1936….
