Garnaut Express Great Optimism About His Ability To Destroy Australia’s Economy

Garnaut brings hard facts to the table

IN contrast to the tone of most of the debate in Australia, Ross Garnaut projects a great optimism about the world’s commitment to tackle global warming.

At 4C, “we would be in unknown territory for humanity” with an 85 per cent probability of large-scale melting of the Greenland ice sheet, 48 per cent of species at risk of extinction, 90 per cent of coral reefs subject to bleaching and increased risks of accelerated disintegration of the west Antarctic ice sheet and areas such as the Amazon rainforest turning from carbon sinks into sources of carbon.

The boogie man wil get you if you don’t watch out!

    • Baa Humbug says:

The boogie man is a gold miner who trashed the Papua New Guinea environment. He probably has millions invested in green industries.
I’ll bet London to a brick.

  2. Latitude says:

are these the same people that claim the past warming of Greenland was a local event?

    Now it’s 85% certain that it’s not…………………………….

    • suyts says:

lol, yes, its interesting to note, they generally agree that Greenland was pretty much melted ……. being local or not, but they don’t explain how it was that we didn’t all drown back then……

  3. NikFromNYC says:

“with an 85 per cent probability of large-scale melting”

This was the primary metaphorical theme of the Star Trek series, in both the characters of Spock and of Data. They were classic Kant and Godel theory examples of the pitfalls of humorlessness logic.

Each generation, minus science, has fought this same battle. Now they are after Science itself, understandably and indefatigably, with much gnashing of teeth.

“It is good to be learned in the things that are hidden from the wise and the intellectual ones of the world but are revealed, as if by nature, to the poor and simple, to women and little children.” – Vincent van Gogh (letter to Theo van Gogh, 1878)

  4. Mike Davis says:

There is a 99.99% probability that this guy does not have a friggen clue!

  5. Ross McLeod says:

You missed the major point of his presentation – and it IS pretty scary.

For a modest carbon price, $26 per tonne, for which the government has promised compensation which will cover the increased costs to consumers – (yes it is true – Australia is such a utopia that we can fight the dreaded “carbon pollution” and have a little spare change from the compensation we all receive because we must change people’s wasteful habits where energy is concerned and increasing the price will make us respect it more but we will compensate you fully for the increased price ???) –

Sorry got lost in that incredible logic – but it is all smoke and mirrors to hide the fact from the committed “we know climate change is real and worse than we thought last week, month, year, decade etc” brigade that a carbon tax will result in higher energy costs. Renewable energy will increase this further. I think the “brigade” will get a shock when they realise the real reason for pricing carbon was to tax the last free thing on earth – the air we breathe.

The kicker everybody seems to have missed is Garnaut’s suggested compensation.

He suggested raising the tax free threshold by $20,000 which must mean he expects $26 per tonne to cost us $3000 per annum.

Given Australia has a pension system and an aging population and not giving pensioners the same level of compensation would be political suicide I think many Government ministers must have had coronaries when they saw this.

Ain’t gonna happen – the compensation I mean.

The Government is gone also – only a matter of time. I used to vote for them.

  6. Luke of the D says:

48% of all species at risk… really? Even if he is only referring to Oz, still outstanding that there claim. But then again, maybe he is referring to the “end of the world by carbon-death” then he’s being optimistic… for we all know that CO2, that evil trace gas, is plotting to overthrow reality itself… I’d think that 100% of species are at risk… maybe even 200% of species! Just think of the danger that global warming poses to the species that don’t actually exist!
