Arctic Sea Ice Gone in Summer Within Five Years?
Seth Borenstein in Washington
Associated PressDecember 12, 2007
An already relentless melting of the Arctic greatly accelerated this summer—a sign that some scientists worry could mean global warming has passed an ominous tipping point.
One scientist even speculated that summer sea ice could be gone in five years.
Greenland’s ice sheet melted nearly 19 billion tons more than the previous high mark, and the volume of Arctic sea ice at summer’s end was half what it was just four years ago, according to new NASA satellite data obtained by the Associated Press (AP).
“The Arctic is screaming,” said Mark Serreze, senior scientist at the government’s snow and ice data center in Boulder, Colorado.

How’s that prediction of 0 square metres of ice for the summer minimum 2012 looking now, Mark “There’s supposed to be ice in the Arctic” Serreze?
Actually, I note that article doesn’t name that “one scientist” in the same sentence, so it might not have been him.. but it wouldn’t come as any great surprise if it was.
Climate tipping points are seen in all climate records on all time scales. The great climate shift of the 70s is a well known example. RWP and MWP may be better known but no one can eny the shift from Glacial to Interglacial or vice versa.
After a winter of record cold weather and snow fall in the year of 2011? We are experiencing the flooding of the Mississippi River Flood Plains from Minnesota to Louisiana because of record snow melt and heavy rain fall that came in with the coming of Spring and Summer. Now next year we will have little no ice in the Arctic? Where did these people come up with these computer models? They sure need to go back and start over. They have made a mistake or two somewhere. Maybe by turning on the computer to start with, would be my guess.
“Where did these people come up with these computer models?”
They are a little old … from the year 2000. I think the ice predicting model is called the Millenial Year Arctic-ice Surveying System, which means when you ask them where they got their results, their answer is “from M.Y.A.S.S.” :).
If the Arctic has been “screaming” and now it will be dead, maybe it will STFU? 🙂
Just wondering….
Funny how the United States government wants someone like Mark Serreze promoted to running one of its agencies.
And then there’s Lisa Jackson, President Obama appointee to head the EPA. According to her H2O is pollution:

Now that we know we have reached the tipping point, perhaps we just get on with living our lives and accept it is too late to do anything about global warming even if we wanted to.
