NOAA and their useful idiots have filling the airwaves with claims that 2012 is the hottest year in US history. They accomplish this by massive cheating. The raw maximum temperature data shows that 2012 (so far) has been the seventh warmest year – with 1934, 1921 and 1925 being the three hottest years.

They accomplished this by adding more than three degrees on to 2012 relative to one hundred years ago.
How do we get this fraudulent activity by the US government stopped?
The only way NOAA and NASA can create the impression of a fast-warming planet is by fudging land-based temperature data through homogenization, interpolation and tortuous time of observation (TOB) adjustments. The data-manipulation architects, of course, ignore or downplay the urban heat island (UHI) effect, because it would force downward temperature adjustments.
Putting responsible adults in charge of NOAA would be a start.

I would guess that something like 95% of the regular readers that Steven has here at his blog realize that the “scientists” like James Hansen are being paid with our taxes to lie to the American public. We know that when official, government approved, numbers come out reporting historical temperatures, we are being lied to. And yet… and yet… many (not all) of those same readers, the ones who KNOW that they are being lied to about our climate, will believe it when their government tells them that inflation is 2%, or tells them that unemployment is 8%, or tells them that this country or that country is the latest terrorist threat which we need to destroy. The truth is — and this is a very simple truth — if someone will steal your coat, then yes, they will steal your car if they can. If someone will lie about your weather and climate, then yes, they will lie about anything else they will tell you.
Compare the care with which luxury goods and wood/brass scientific instruments were made to the cheap import crap of today and an adjustment could be argued for to tighten the error bars back in the day rather than widen them.
If Romney wins, his first act of office should be to abolish NOAA, which has degenerated into the Department of Propaganda and Disinformation at taxpayer’s expense.
That would be nice but we shouldn’t give the impression to non-USA citizens that something like this is even possible in our rogue government, because it is not.
The 104th Congress came into office in 1995 with a healthy majority in the House, a workable one in the Senate and couldn’t even stop taxpayer funding of PBS or NEA/NEH ( which funded some rather brazen highly-offensive projects attacking Christianity such as ‘Piss Christ’, Mary with feces, and other garbage from Maplethorpe, etc ).
We need to face the fact that we have a new financial paradigm at the Fed and State government level where once something is placed on the books it cannot be removed. Spending without consequence or fear of de-funding. This is the disease that Socialists have imparted upon the world for the past 100 years.
I believe it will take nothing short of a civil war to turn it around. Who, besides us, is willing to renounce free money ( stolen from our grandkids ) when we will be dead and buried before the bill comes due.
Besides, how does placing a socialist republicrat at the head of a big-spending government improve things? The best we can hope for from him is limited growth, in other words spending increases at 5% rather than 10%.

At root it’s scientific incompetence, only compounded by two generations of miseducation and a generation of political manipulation on top of that. First we have to have a new top-down political leadership that understands “climate policy” is an absurdity at the present state of the science. At nearly the same time, we need a top-down recognition among scientists and scientific institutions that a thorough, fundamental rethinking of climate science is needed. I can tell you how to do it in a decisive way, but how to do it practically eludes even me, and you’re not going to like it, because I have said it many times over the last 2 years or so: Force every interested physical scientist to explain, within the consensus theory, why the Venus/Earth temperature ratio does not show an additive “greenhouse effect”, due to the much larger concentration of CO2 in Venus’s atmosphere over Earth’s, but that temperature ratio is instead a constant, over the range of Earth tropospheric pressures in both atmospheres, and that constant is completely and precisely explained by the ratio of the two planets’ distances from the Sun, and NOTHING ELSE. If they can’t do that, they MUST ACCEPT the need for a fundamental rethinking of climate science. Calling it a “coincidence” is not allowed; they must explain, quantitatively, how their theory necessarily produces that amazing result. NONE of those who have dismissed my little analysis, or my simple interpretation of the physical reason for it (both atmospheres are warmed by direct absorption of incident solar radiation, and indeed both by absorption of the same fraction of that incident radiation) have even come close to doing that; those that have tried, have promulgated nonsense (or avoided the problem by calling it a “coincidence”, as already noted). And, since climate scientists will all have clearly failed in their professional responsibility to promulgate science in agreement with definitive observations (the Venus/Earth comparison), that rethinking should NOT be entrusted to climate scientists, nor equally suborned climate institutions. But from my experience so far, it looks to me like it will take a new generation — and perhaps 2 or 3 generations down the road — to do this little, definitive exercise. There is a good chance the world will have to endure a third World War before the insanity of this generation is discharged and left behind by the true progress of science (and the human spirit), through hard self-correction.
Also to add to what you were saying about Venus, it’s atmosphere is over 90x as dense as Earth’s, and since the temperature profile is the same, it makes you wonder where these AGW nutcases think the greenhouse gases are the primary driver of the warm temperatures on Venus.

This unprecedented amount of climate cheating is well passed the tipping point of fraudulent adjustments and is truly alarming.
There’s no “cheating.” From the most recent annual report on the USCRN:
“The USCRN annual CONUS air temperature departures for the period from 2004–08 are extremely well aligned with those derived from the national USHCN V2 (Figure 15). For these five years, the USCRN explains 99.7% of the maximum temperature and 99.5% of the minimum temperature variance in the USHCN V2 annual air temperature departures, with a mean bias of -0.03°C for both maximum and minimum temperature. This finding provides independent verification that the homogenization adjustments made to the USHCN V2 data do not lead, in the last five years of the record, to a different result than one would derive from science-quality measurements taken at pristine locations. “
So if the data is adjusted up, even for a single year, by over 1.5C, you find nothing odd about that? Homogenization adjustments… they appear to have magical powers…
If the adjustments are done by “climate scientists” it’s o.k. cause they are trying to save the world.
USHCN has adjusted older temperatures downwards by almost two degrees. Your study doesn’t address that and you are wasting everyone’s time as usual.
