The Hofstra University student killed during a home-invasion robbery was the victim of friendly fire from a veteran cop, Nassau County police revealed last night.
The officer unleashed a barrage of bullets when intruder Dalton Smith pointed a gun at him while using Andrea Rebello as a human shield, police said.
“He kept saying, ‘I’m going to kill her,’ then pointed the gun at the police officer,” Det. Lt. John Azzata said.
The cop fired eight times, with one bullet accidentally hitting Rebello, 21, in the head, he said.

Police magazines need to be limited to seven rounds.
Many police are forced to have extremely heavy triggers, to prevent accidental discharge. But this also causes them to be very bad shots. It also doesn’t help that many police don’t go to firing ranges to practice on a regular basis. The plain fact is that many citizens are better trained and able to use guns than the police are, but are forbidden by illegal laws and statues from protecting the public.
I think it’s obvious that the first thought of the policemen was his own safety and not the safety of the victim. Police/Public Safety Officers should be looked up to when they put the public safety first regardless of the danger to themselves.
The perpetrator didn’t even get a shot off, so what exactly was this guy thinking?
Heavy trigger or not, this cop failed in the worst way.
Not totally. The cop has a duty to stop the perp from harming people. Yes, the cop screwed up and killed the girl. But he did stop the perp. The perp won’t be hurting anyone else.

Horrible
Why didn’t. This girl fire 2 rounds from her shotgun?
Amazing, the girl is being used as a human shield and this cop opens fire at both of them ? Most cops can’t hit the side of a barn door with their revolvers from 5 yards let alone pick off a miscreant hiding behind a victim … he would have done better to throw his weapon at the miscreant !
“The cop fired eight times, with one bullet accidentally hitting Rebello, 21, in the head, ”
He ACCIDENTLY hit her in the head with one round ? Friendly fire ? … this idiot cop murdered an innocent person. One is reminded of the unprovoked attack on innocent victims by zealous cops who mistook two little Asian ladies in a blue truck for the ‘rogue cop’ … a big black fellow in a white truck.
“He was treated for trauma after the incident, said James Carver, head of the Nassau County Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association.
Nassau County Police Commissioner Thomas Dale said the cop was “OK,” adding: “I believe he’s out sick.”
“We’re going to make sure he receives counseling and appropriate medical attention if he needs it,” Dale said.”
WHAT ! I mean WTF … no mention of the trauma to the victims twin sister and family … the ultimate height of hubris !!!
AND, Obummer wants to disarm citizens ?
I’ve got to check on my moonshine still so I don’t have time to hunt up the links for you where the NYPD loosed a barrage of gunfire which totally missed the perp or else killed one or two of those pain in the rear (to the PoPo) innocent standers by. Look it up. If it don’t make your blood boil, it’ll make your blood run cold.
New York SOP reports show police hit percentage at under 20%, out of thousands of rounds fired.
“In Los Angeles, which has 9,699 officers, the police fired 283 rounds in 2006, hitting their target 77 times, for a hit ratio of 27 percent, said Officer Ana Aguirre, a spokeswoman. Last year, they fired 264 rounds, hitting 76 times, for a 29 percent hit ratio, she said.
So far this year the hit ratio in Los Angeles is 31 percent, with 74 of 237 bullets fired by officers hitting the target.
In the New York reports, the hit ratio of officers who committed suicide with a firearm — and, therefore, hit their target 100 percent of the time — is included when the overall average is calculated, bringing it up.”

Yet another staggering huge reason why you should not rely solely upon cops for protection when when your life is threatened.
This was clearly a case where the cop should have stayed behind cover, and let the situation devolve into a hostage negotiation. The odds were much better all the innocents would have lived. Instead, the cop deliberately exposed himself to the threat against which he opened fire. This cop clearly had delusions of being a hero, and did not factor in the threat of his own poor marksmanship on the innocent hostage.
if this is police policy that’s fucked up
