If you read The Codebreakers by David Kahn, you will find out that NSA records the content of all calls from and to foreign countries and they have been doing so since the 1960s or earlier. They pass the calls through an algorithm that searches for certain key words and then if the algorithm detects something of possible interest, a real person will listen to the call.
I once interviewed with NSA and when I told them that I was good at breaking codes, the interview was terminated.
You have experiencing breaking encryption algorithms? If you said “I’m good at breaking codes” you probably just sounded dumb to them…
NSA had a secrecy policy and people that they hired at that time were not supposed to know that NSA was in the code breaking and making business. I learned that after the interview.
The Puzzle Palace is also worth a look.
In the 1960s if you lived close enough to NSA Headquarters and your lawn mower or car wasn’t running right, NSA came out and fixed it for you… free. Back then most of the long distance phone traffic was either radio or microwave based, and a arching electric current played heck with reception.

Don’t tell the State you’re good at anything, better tell them nothing.

Will rise up and fight while we stood still” – Silent Running
