  1. The Iconoclast says:

Interesting comment on the wired.co.uk article about the attempt:

The proposed rowing route is NOT THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE which is defined as a sea route from Atlantic Arctic Circle in Davis Strait to the Pacific Arctic Circle in the Bering Strait. 135 boats have gone before this crew and properly completed the entire Northwest Passage – if you are going to call it a Northwest Passage then don’t ride on using buzz-words of rhetoric disinformation – you are just rowing between Inuvik and Pond Inlet – be honest enough to call it what it is. …

New ping a minute ago. 3.35 miles in the last 9 hours. Looks like a lot if you zoom way in.

Please re-post the Viking version of “row, row your boat”, I love it!

  4. There Is No Substitute for Victory says:

    How’s about this one?

Round the world and home again
    That’s the sailor’s way
    Faster, faster, faster, faster,

There’s no earthly way of knowing
    Which direction we are going
There’s no knowing where we’re rowing
Or which way the river’s flowing

Is it raining? is it snowing?
    Is a hurricane a–blowing?

Not a speck of light is showing
So the danger must be growing.
Are the fires of Hell a–glowing?
    Is the grisly reaper mowing?

Yes, the danger must be growing
For the rowers keep on rowing
    And they’re certainly not showing
Any signs that they are slowing

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Squier great artist and not a train wreck of a human being!

Although I think a more appropriate choice woud have been “The Stroke”.

  7. Caleb says:

Their science is incorrect, their politics are incorrect (in my opinion,) and their judgement was likely faulty to head back out, but have some pity, you guys. Were you never young and stupid? (Or middle aged and stupid?)

I think they headed back out not so much to prove Global Warming is real, but rather to prove they are not wimps. Pride comes before the fall.

The ocean can swiftly reduce a man from a position of pride to a state where a man understands what really matters isn’t the specific intellectual details of a scientific or political theory. Nor does much else matter, not even sponsors nor (gasp) money. All that matters is getting you ass out alive, and seeing those you love again.

These bozos seem hellbent on achieving this state of mind. Have some pity, you guys. some people only realize their mistake as they go down for the third time.

    • Sleepalot says:

I agree, but with a slightly different rationale. I think they continued because the kayakers did – confirmation bias. (Did the kayakers continue? I’m guessing they did.)

      • Caleb says:

I am of two minds about the spectacle. On one hand I think they are all mad, and on the other hand I wish I was young again.

        • Sleepalot says:

The trouble with “young” is the accompanying “poor” and “stupid”. I’ve seen mamba (miles and miles of bugger-all), and I’ve
seen cold, wet and miserable – I lived in Cumbria for 14 years! These days I get all the cold, tired, hungry and frightened I need
          with a hospital outpatients appointment.

  8. Boner Idle says:

From their lost post, they commented that even a moderate wind wouldn’t let them continue.
‘So the answer my friends is blowing in the winds” – Bob D.
