The surface temperature record is so polluted with upwards adjustments made by global warming activists in the US and the UK, that it is probably worthless at this point.
It is sort of like Rooney being given a penalty kick in the 87th minute against The Rangers. It is the only way he can score any more.

If you repeatedly raise the error bar and then adjust to the high end, you get exponential growth in your confirmation bias.
If they carry on 1998 will soon be cooler than 1898. Unless of course they reduce 1898 as well in which case we will eventually find out the 19th C was colder than the ice age.
