Hurricane Camille was the third and strongest tropical cyclone and second hurricane during the 1969 Atlantic hurricane season. It was the second of three catastrophic Category 5 hurricanes to make landfall in the United States during the 20th century (the others being 1935’s Labor Day hurricane and 1992’s Hurricane Andrew), which it did near the mouth of the Mississippi River on the night of August 17.

Camille was the only Atlantic hurricane to exhibit recorded sustained wind speeds of at least 190 miles per hour (310 km/h) until Allen equaled it in 1980. It is the only confirmed Atlantic hurricane in recorded history to make landfall with wind speeds at or above such a level.The actual wind speed of Hurricane Camille will never be known, however, as it destroyed all of the wind recording instruments upon making landfall. By central pressure, in turn, Camille was the second strongest U.S. landfalling hurricane in recorded history, second only to the Labor Day Hurricane in 1935. It was also the first modern Category 5 hurricane to ever receive a person’s name when making landfall in the United States.

I took five randomly selected and approximately equidistant locations along the US Pacific and Atlantic coastlines, and calculated the average sea level rise rates for each coast based on University of Colorado sea level data.

The West Coast showed a slight decline since 1993.

The East Coast showed a rise of 2.1 mm/year, well below the claimed global rate of 3.2 mm/year.

Bottom line is that claims of the US being threatened by sea level rise are nothing but the usual bullshit from the usual suspects.

Antarctica is likely to be the world’s only habitable continent by the end of this century if global warming remains unchecked, the Government’s chief scientist, Professor Sir David King, said last week.

He said the Earth was entering the “first hot period” for 60 million years, when there was no ice on the planet and “the rest of the globe could not sustain human life”. The warning – one of the starkest delivered by a top scientist – comes as ministers decide next week whether to weaken measures to cut the pollution that causes climate change, even though Tony Blair last week described the situation as “very, very critical indeed”.

The Prime Minister – who was launching a new alliance of governments, businesses and pressure groups to tackle global warming – added that he could not think of “any bigger long-term question facing the world community”.
