This year “will without a doubt” rank in the top five lowest levels of ice extent ever recorded in the satellite era, and there is a good possibility that 2013 could rank second in terms of recorded ice lows, said Walt Meier, a scientist at the National Snow & Ice Data Center.

Arctic ice area is increasing, as new ice is forming rapidly north of 80N. Ice area is the highest since 2006.

The year over year change in Arctic sea ice area has blown away the record for ice growth, by more than a factor of two.

Flood emergency in Boulder County; 1 person killed, streets impassable

Massive flooding has made the streets of Boulder impassable and destroyed multiple homes in Boulder County, according to Officer of Emergency Management officials.

One person was killed in Jamestown when a structure collapsed because of the flooding, the OEM said.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood emergency for Boulder County and northwest Jefferson County. A mandatory evacuation has been issued for Jamestown and the Fourmile burn scar area.

The National Weather Service said that county officials reported multiple homes had collapsed in the Jamestown area.

CU-Boulder announced that the campus will be closed on Thursday because of the flooding.

While it seems unlikely that a record minimum of sea-ice extent will be set this September, the thinner ice at the start of summer could mean that the actual volume of ice may reach a new low.

Rachel Tilling, PhD student at University College London, who is working with the CryoSat data stated, “Readings from CryoSat in October, when the ice starts to refreeze, will confirm this either way.”

An effort by Missouri legislators to expand gun rights and make federal gun regulations unenforceable failed by one vote in the state Senate Wednesday night, as the body’s top two Republican officials voted to sustain a veto by the Democratic governor.

Senate President Pro Tem Tom Dempsey and Majority Leader Ron Richard were the only two GOP members to vote against the legislation, which declared that any federal policies that “infringe on the people’s right to keep and bear arms” shall be invalid in Missouri. It would have created state misdemeanor charges against federal authorities who attempted to enforce those laws or anyone who published the identity of a gun owner. Another provision could have allowed police and prosecutors to be targeted with lawsuits for attempting to enforce the nullified laws.

Cabin fever is starting to set in

Heavy rains pound Boulder, Fort Collins; flood warning until 4:15 a.m.

The Boulder OEM warned motorists to stay off the roads as more and more streets were closed because of water. Flooded intersections were reported throughout Boulder, Fort Collins and smaller towns in northern Colorado. Stranded vehicles were common.

Rain pounded much of theFront Range all Wednesday night, with as many as five overlapping flash flood warnings issued.

The National Weather Service called it “a pretty serious situation” at 9:45 p.m. and said 3.35 inches of rain had fallen in Boulder the past six hours.

The Daily Camera reported at 10:40 p.m. that the University of Colorado is beginning to evacuate family housing. The campus police said on Twitter that the evacuations were limited to some housing near Boulder Creek, but said at 11:15 p.m. that about 100 to 200 people were evacuated.

A siren sounded about 10 p.m., meaning people should stay away from Boulder Creek.

Mike Chard, Boulder OEM director, said officials expect another 1 to 3 inches of rain over the next few hours.

Unofficially, more than 6 ¼ inches of rain has fallen in Boulder since Monday.
