Santa Fe Does This To People

Reader View: Climate change — the affects are real and local

By Mary Wolf

Forest fires, persistent drought and record temperatures are now more of a threat to my business than Amazon.com or e-readers. And it’s not just local weather extremes that affect us. We’ve lost sales because of delivery delays caused by climate change: planes grounded in Phoenix due to extreme temperatures, devastating tornadoes across the South and Midwest, crippling floods and snowstorms on the East Coast.

For businesses such as Collected Works that survive by offering superior customer service, superstorms are now a bigger concern than superstores.

Reader View: Climate change — the affects are real and local – My View – Santa Fe New Mexican

I was born in New Mexico during the fourteen year long drought of the 1940s and 1950s. It was much worse than the current drought.

The giant aspen groves above Santa Fe are the result of much larger fires which occurred in the 1890s. Fire is an essential part of the forest cycle.

As far as snowstorms on the East Coast go, how about this one from 1888.

If Mary was dealing with reality, she would realize that the Internet is killing her business. It has nothing to do with CO2. Also, you would think that the owner of a book store would know the difference between affects and effects.

Cyclists Get A Lucky Break

I remembered that I am in the frozen wasteland to the north on the 23rd, and won’t arrive back in Fort Collins until 3am on the 24th. So I may be off the mark when the cyclists come through that morning.

They probably don’t need to worry about getting humiliated on the hills by the old guy.

There Is Only One Reason To Buy A Car

ScreenHunter_205 Aug. 04 10.53

Military grade cars kill and maim millions of people a year. The only reason to purchase one of these weapons of mass destruction is to kill lots of people. Civilians should only be allowed single stroke engines, with a top speed slow enough to allow pedestrians to get out of the way. The danger of self-reloading cylinders is unacceptable after today’s Santa Ana massacre.

Twenty-five years after accusing an innocent man of rape, Tawana Brawley is finally paying for her lies.

Last week, 10 checks totaling $3,764.61 were delivered to ex-prosecutor Steven Pagones — the first payments Brawley has made since a court determined in 1998 that she defamed him with her vicious hoax.

A Virginia court this year ordered the money garnisheed from six months of Brawley’s wages as a nurse there.

She still owes Pagones $431,000 in damages. And she remains defiantly unapologetic.

“It’s a long time coming,” said Pagones, 52, who to this day is more interested in extracting a confession from Brawley than cash.

Colorado Exceptional Drought Always Targets The Poor First

ScreenHunter_199 Aug. 04 05.45

Fort Collins took a beating Saturday from torrential rain and hail that spent the afternoon menacing the Front Range and northeastern Colorado.  There were numerous thunderstorm warnings, a tornado warning and an hours long tornado watch in parts of the area, along with many reports of tornadoes across Northern Colorado. The Boulder National Weather Service Twitter page said baseball-size hail had been reported 3 miles northeast of Wellington.

Ban Assault Cars

Californians can purchase these weapons of mass destruction without any sort of background check. Cars kill over one million people every year.

LOS ANGELES –  The driver of a car that struck 12 people on the Venice Beach boardwalk in California, killing one and hospitalizing nine others early Saturday evening, did so deliberately, according to witnesses.
