Reader Brian D sent over this 1971 National Geographic map, which shows that there is a lot more Arctic sea ice now than there was 42 years ago.

I remember seeing that map at the time.  The next map overlays current ice extent on the 1971 map, with green representing ice present in 2013 that was not present in 1971, and red representing the opposite.

NSIDC likes to pretend that ice has been declining steadily, by starting their graphs near the century maximum in 1978.

But sadly for them, the 1990 IPCC report captured the growth in ice prior to 1979.

Fort Collins police have asked local religious organizations to keep an eye out for suspicious behavior after a self-proclaimed “Islamist jihadist” threatened Mormons and Catholics “would be destroyed” in the next two weeks, a memo sent by authorities said.

The man hadn’t been seen in the Fort Collins area as of Sunday, and there is no immediate danger to the public, Fort Collins Police Services Sgt. Mike West told the Coloradoan.

No further details, including the man’s identity, were immediately available. Threats were made in general regard to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Catholic Church; no local organizations were specifically referenced in the FCPS memo.

WHY WE’RE HERE

The Mainstream Last First adventure began earlier this month, when Paul Gleeson, Frank Wolf, Denis Barnett and I set out on our attempt to become the first people to cross the 3,000-km Northwest Passage in a single season using human power.

Not going to happen.

We are rowing a purposebuilt, 25-foot rowboat on a journey to highlight issues of climate change and arctic sovereignty, as well as the historical significance of the route to Canada.

Yes, the Arctic climate is much colder than it was 70 years ago.

Our destination is Pond Inlet, Nunavut, on the east coast of Baffin Island, and we are hoping to make it there by early fall after 90 days along a route that is only recently navigable because of the Arctic’s melting ice.

The rowers have been obscured by clouds for several days, but radar from two days ago shows how close the Beaufort Sea ice was to Cape Parry on Sunday. It is undoubtedly much closer to the rower’s tiny island now, where they are stuck in a storm.

It is dangerous to listen to greedy people who are looking to make money off your suicide mission.

The game is over. There is no “new set of rules.” Just a bunch of true believers stuck in the ice in the Northwest Passage, and a bunch of scientists trying to keep their funding coming in.

Normally the high Arctic has about 90 days above freezing. This year there was less than half that.
