Real Climate Loses A Pole

Not only has NSIDC lost track of the South Pole, but Real Climate has too

Polar Amplification

Filed under: Arctic and Antarctic Climate modelling Climate Science Greenhouse gases — group @ 2 January 2006
Guest commentary by Cecilia Bitz, University of Washington

“Polar amplification” usually refers to greater climate change near the pole compared to the rest of the hemisphere or globe in response to a change in global climate forcing, such as the concentration of greenhouse gases (GHGs) or solar output (see e.g. Moritz et al 2002). Polar amplification is thought to result primarily from positive feedbacks from the retreat of ice and snow. There are a host of other lesser reasons that are associated with the atmospheric temperature profile at the poles, temperature dependence of global feedbacks, moisture transport, etc. Observations and models indicate that the equilibrium temperature change poleward of 70N or 70S can be a factor of two or more greater than the global average.

RealClimate: Polar Amplification

Antarctica is cooling and ice is increasing. The theory is fatally flawed.

The Lost Continent

The NSIDC September Sea Ice News is out, and they failed to mention the record high sea ice area in Antarctica.

Sea Ice News and Analysis

Antarctica is actually a fairly large continent and it has a lot of ice, so it is somewhat surprising that our nation’s leading ice experts pretend to be unaware of its existence.

Antarctic Sea Ice Above Normal Every Day This Year

Not only is Antarctic sea ice area at a record high, and more than seventeen thousand Manhattans larger than the highest Arctic ice area ever recorded – but it is has been above normal every day during 2012

One For Posterity

Check this out. The deadscience straw man article criticizing me for things I didn’t say, made the front page of Google news.

That record high ice area is making the hockey team desperate. And it is likely to get worse.

Scarecrow Alert

Check out this straw man from Dead Science.

Distracting from the news that Arctic sea-ice extent reached a record low on Sept.16 is a widely circulating blog article claiming that at the opposite end of the Earth, Antarctic sea ice is more than making up for the losses.

In the post, climate change skeptic and blogger Steven Goddard states that Antarctic sea ice reached its highest level ever recorded for the 256th day of the calendar year on Sept. 12. He reasons that the Southern Hemisphere must be balancing the warming of the Northern Hemisphere by becoming colder (and thus, net global warming is zero).

I said nothing of the sort. This is a classic technique of fraudsters. He couldn’t argue against anything I said, so he simply lied about what I said.

We are at the equinox. At the North Pole, the sun is dipping below the horizon. At 70S, the sun is 20 degrees (90 minus 70)  above the horizon, and getting higher every day.

Meanwhile, Oscar’s two goals weren’t enough to make up for John Terry’s hapless play. His semifinal red card last season probably secured them the championship.
