The map below shows the difference between National Ice Center ice (yellow) and NSIDC ice (red.)
NSIDC uses microwave emissions to spot ice, and they are missing lots of ice which is seen in visible light.

National Ice Center August 18 2012 vs August 18 2007.
NOAA’s National Ice Center shows that there is a lot more ice now than the 2007 minimum.
Turquoise shows ice present in 2012 that was not present in September 2007. Red shows the opposite. As you can see, 40% of the current ice covered area would have to disappear to match the 2007 minimum.

The Canadian Government also reports a lot more ice than what satellite microwave sensors are reporting. Record minimum claims? Complete BS, from the usual suspects..
About last week’s storm
-Storm area 1 million square kilometers
-Wave height of 2 to 3 meters broke apart ice into smaller chunks, increasing surface area and thus melting
-Storm mixed fresh water at surface (from melted ice) with deeper warmer saltier water from below increasing melting rate
-Storm agitated water to depths of 500 meters (where water is much warmer) bringing it to surface increasing melt rate
-Low pressure of storm center sucked up water level by 0.3 meters, causing warm water to flow into Arctic Ocean from Pacific Ocean via Bering Strait and from Atlantic Ocean, increasing melting
-Storm rotation (counterclockwise) spread out ice over larger area and pushed ice towards open ocean (on Atlantic Ocean side)Julienne Stroeve NSIDC
You can`t make this stuff up
So why should we listen to Hansen as opposed to, say, Sen. James Inhofe or radio personality Rush Limbaugh? For starters, Inhofe and Limbaugh have absolutely no background in climate science. Their (inaccurate) assessments of global warming are based almost entirely on opinion, rather than fact.
Let’s compare this to Hansen:
B.A., & Ph.D. in Physics
M.S. in Astronomy
In other words, no background in climate science
Published for decades in peer-reviewed journals
Heads a premier institution for climate research
George W Bush headed the United States for eight years, and Huffington Post said he was incompetent. The argument is idiotic.
Second, while global warming deniers typically base their arguments on misinformation (“Hey! These are the same scientists who warned us there would be an ice age!”), Hansen’s work from thirty years ago is now quantifiably proving to be very accurate
His work from twenty years ago was a total bust, and I am pretty sure that Manhattan is not underwater.
Third, Hansen has the support of world-class experts, such as fellow climate guru Michael E. Mann
Another incompetent scientist agrees, and that seals the deal.
Neil Wagner: Global Warming Has Arrived: The Ultimate Unwanted Houseguest
If you only listen to people who agree with you, you are guaranteed to be ignorant.
The Greenland Summit Camp takes part in a regularly updated Arctic blog. No one seems to have mentioned the NASA phony meltdown, apparently because it was a total non-event.
Let’s panic and turn control of the US over to the UN, in order to stop all this bad stuff.
Higher seas, more storms for Victoria, B.C.: climate report CBC News
Posted: Aug 18, 2012
The report predicts temperatures in Victoria could rise by more than two degrees by 2050, the amount of summer rain could drop by 32 per cent, while winter precipitation may jump 14 per cent, along with a similar increase in the number of intense storms.
It says the sea level could rise by 45 centimetres during winter high tides, and that combined with more storms would cause flooding and other storm-related damage.

Temperatures in Victoria have been falling since 1850, and there has been no sea level rise for decades.
