Polar ice cap melting away in 2008 ?

The latest salvo comes courtesy of Xinhua, which reports that Olav Orheim, the head of the Norwegian International Polar Year Secretariat, is placing his money on this summer. Noting that its ice sheet had reached a historical low of 3m sq. km last summer – it covered around 7.5m sq. km as recently as 2000 – Orheim told Xinhua that “if Norway’s average temperature this year equals that in 2007, the ice cap in the Arctic will all melt away.” Barring this disaster, Orheim predicted that excess carbon dioxide emissions and higher average temperatures would unpredictably alter the region’s fragile ecosystems. On a separate note, he said that Asia would likely be hardest hit by rising sea levels, estimating that a one meter rise would affect “nearly 100 million people on an area of 800,000 square km in Asia and direct economic loss will amount to 400 billion U.S. dollars.”

Hansen : 100 Millimetres Sea Level Rise Per Year

This planetary energy imbalance is itself now sufficient to melt ice corresponding to one meter of sea level rise per decade

Scientific reticence and sea level rise – IOPscience

He must be thinking about the 400,000 nuclear bombs of added heat going into the ocean every day. Each time one explodes, it whispers “nutcase” in Hansen’s ear.

Someone Close The Damn Door Already

The Earth has been facing imminent doom since Earth day, 1970. The door to rescue the planet is always about to close.

May 21, 2012

While global negotiations have slowed since the high-intensity period over the last three years (in Copenhagen, Cancun, and Durban), that doesn’t mean we can afford for action to slow down.  After all, as the International Energy Agency just pointed out the door for avoiding the greatest impacts is quickly closing.

Hansen is about to close the door.

Barack Obama has only four years to save the world. That is the stark assessment of Nasa scientist and leading climate expert Jim Hansen who last week warned only urgent action by the new president could halt the devastating climate change that now threatens Earth. Crucially, that action will have to be taken within Obama’s first administration, he added.

Is there any way these geniuses can just shut the door, leave it closed, go drink a beer and STFU?

New French President Won’t Suffer Fools

French President Francois Hollande skipped Mr. Obama’s remarks at Monday’s session, arriving to take his seat only after Mr. Obama had finished speaking. Mr. Hollande campaigned on a pledge to remove France’s 3,400 troops from Afghanistan by the end of this year, and he has publicly resisted efforts by Mr. Obama to reconsider his vow.

Romm 2010 : BP Oil Spill To Ravage The Gulf Coast For A Generation – Ruin The Florida Keys

It’s now clear that the Gulf Coast will be ravaged, that the impact will be felt for at least a generation, and that we will probably be testing seafood from the area for decades. If the Loop Current entrains a significant amount of the oil and dispersants to the Florida Keys, America’s great coral reef might suffer irreparable damage.

Obama Gives A Sneak Preview Of His Second Term

Obama somehow suckered Silicon Valley into voting for him once, but his recent attacks on venture capitalism (and capitalism in general) have fully unmasked his desire to kill Silicon Valley’s roots.

Silicon Valley exists because of private venture capital, which has led to the creation of tens of millions of jobs in the US and abroad. China and India have been lifted out of poverty due to new technologies funded by venture capitalists in the US and Europe.

I am a founder of two venture capital funded companies, one of which was nearly funded by Hermann Hauser – the guy behind ARM computer in Cambridge, UK.  ARM is the processor in all Android devices (and millions of other pieces of electronics.)  Hermann’s VC money has ultimately led to employment for millions of people.

Left up to the government and people with Obama’s understanding of economics, we would all still be using government hand picked vacuum tubes – and China and India would still be starving.

Obama’s vision of technology is Solyndra.  Completely useless and very expensive. How many people did Solyndra lay off? Obama is a dangerous idiot.

Nixon Vindicates Himself : “I Am Not A Crook”

Suzanne Goldenberg writes that one of Gleick’s unnamed buddies says that he didn’t commit forgery, and that his fraud and theft was all good – because it helped stifle debate.

A review has cleared the scientist Peter Gleick of forging any documents in his expose of the rightwing Heartland Institute’s strategy and finances, the Guardian has learned.

Gleick’s sting on Heartland brought unwelcome scrutiny to the organisation’s efforts to block action on climate change, and prompted a walk-out of corporate donors that has created uncertainty about its financial future.

Suzanne then goes on to brag about how little money skeptics have. In her next article she will forget about this, and discuss the big money denier machine.

There was a time when liberals demanded debate and free speech. The end never justified the means. Now people like Suzanne have become the epitome of what they claim to despise – thanks to their mindless primitive fear of CO2, and fear of anyone who doesn’t share their neuroses.
