Behind the present pause in global warming

The temperature departure from the 1951-1980 average over the last 12 years. Trend is about flat (slightly up). (Data from NASA) Has global warming stopped since the turn of the millennium? Yes – if you examine the data in a vacuum. But has the warming pressure on the atmosphere from man-made greenhouse gases stopped? No – not at all. A closer look at the data bears that out.

It’s easy to glance at a temperature chart of the last 12 years (to the right) and draw the conclusion warming has slowed or stopped. That’s what renowned environmental scientist James Lovelock did and he’s now told MSNBC he’s backed away from his dire concerns about global warming.

“We were supposed to be halfway toward a frying world now,” he said. “The world has not warmed up very much since the millennium.”

What the author is saying is that the temperature data doesn’t conform to the theory, so we should ignore the data and stick with theory.

Most of the ice being lost from Antarctica is going as a result of warm water eating the fringes of the continent, scientists say.

The researchers used a satellite laser to measure the thinning occurring on ice shelves – the floating tongues of ice that jut out from the land.

The team’s analysis found the shelves’ shrinkage could not be attributed simply to warmer air temperatures.

Rather, it is warm water getting under the floating ice to melt it from below.

This is leading to a weakening of the shelves, permitting more and more ice to drain from the continent’s interior through tributary glaciers.

Previous studies have already indicated that warmer waters are being driven towards the continent by stronger westerly winds in the Southern Ocean.

Last Sunday (Earth Day, no less), the Discovery Channel aired the final episode of its Frozen Planet series. Titled “On Thin Ice,” the episode captures the staggering changes in our polar regions being wrought by global warming — shrinking glaciers, rising seas, and disappearing habitats. But there was one thing missing: in 45 minutes, not a word was uttered about why all that Arctic ice is melting. In an impressive feat of journalistic malpractice, Discovery completely avoided the fact that the burning of fossil fuels causes climate change, and thanks to a New York Times article, now we know why. Discovery has admitted to censoring itself because it wanted to avoid criticism from climate change deniers.

In an important departure from his recent administration-wide silence on climate change, President Obama announced in a Rolling Stone interview published today that he considers climate change and the money being thrown into the denial of science as one of the most important issues in the coming campaign discussion.

Part of the challenge over these past three years has been that people’s number-one priority is finding a job and paying the mortgage and dealing with high gas prices. In that environment, it’s been easy for the other side to pour millions of dollars into a campaign to debunk climate-change science.

NSIDC tells us that the satellite era began in 1979, and they show extent declining steadily during that period.

This is fascinating, because the 1990 IPCC report told us that the satellite era began in 1972, and that ice extent was much lower in 1974 than in 1979.

NSIDC has been hiding the incline, but what about the period before 1974? The widely published graph below shows a sharp drop in ice extent from 1969 to 1974.

I Can Engage In A Flawed Debate About Climate Change 

This is also fascinating, because the people who were paying attention at the time saw the exact opposite.

When Climatologist George J. Kukla of Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory and his wife Helena analyzed satellite weather data for the Northern Hemisphere, they found that the area of the ice and snow cover had suddenly increased by 12% in 1971 and the increase has persisted ever since. Areas of Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic, for example, were once totally free of any snow in summer; now they are covered year round.

But what about ice thickness? In 1940, Russians reported that the average ice thickness had been reduced to 6.5 feet – about the same as it is today.

The historical record tells us that nothing unusual is happening in the Arctic, which is why alarmists are working hard to rewrite it.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Clergy belonging to a group called Interfaith Moral Action on Climate are urging Congress to enact legislation to combat global warming.

Native American, Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu, Bahai, Jewish and Christian activists held a march, worship service and rally Tuesday before heading to Capitol Hill to lobby their elected representatives.

The Rev. Caroll Baltimore, president of the Progressive National Baptist Convention, said he’s convinced humans cause global warming and can work together to stop it if they’re good stewards of God’s Earth.

Rabbi Fred Scherlinder Dobb of Washington D.C. said Congress should enact policies that discourage dependence on fossil fuels. He said, “The light of God is enough to power the Earth many times over our current needs if we only harness it wisely.”

David “Rotten Ice” Barber told us a couple of years ago that multi-year ice had disappeared from the Arctic. He is back for another round of Canadian fish stories.

MONTREAL — A unique, all-season study of the effects of global warming in the Arctic Ocean shows that climate change is reducing biodiversity and posing “significant challenges to the survival of some of the Arctic’s unique marine species.”

The study also shows that climate change is resulting in the increased distribution through the Arctic food chain of contaminants, such as methylmercury.

The $40-million study, which was conducted by 10 scientific teams from 27 countries, spent 2007-2008 studying open water along what are called flaw leads, or breaks in multi-year ice, where they studied how global warming is changing the entire marine ecosystem in the Arctic.

“The Arctic Ocean is definitely changing on a whole lot of different fronts,” said Prof. David Barber, of the University of Manitoba.
