Joe Romm says that this month’s rains are 100 year rains. Because he doesn’t check facts and spouts alarmist nonsense almost 24X7.

Cherry Picking At The North Pole

North Pole sea ice half as thick as 2001
Doug O’Harra | Aug 25, 2011

Sea ice floating near the top of the world appears to be half as thick as it was 10 years ago, according to reports from a premier German research icebreaker on a nine-week mission to survey the Arctic Ocean from one side to the other.

The 387-foot Polarstern plowed through floes at the geographic North Pole at exactly 11:42 p.m. ADT on Aug. 21 and is now steaming south toward Canada, according to this story posted by the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research.

Over the past few weeks, initial measurements of sea ice have averaged about .9 meters or about three feet — 1.1 meters thinner than comparable measurements taken in 2001, the last time the Polarstern visited the North Pole and a season when observed floe depth matched the long-term average.

But in what could be a disconcerting harbinger for the 2010 melt season — about to reach its low point during the next three to four weeks — the ice thickness measured by Polarstern scientists this summer is almost exactly the same as measurements taken in the central Arctic in 2007.

North Pole ice gets carried out the Fram Strait and is often thin. In the 1950s submarines surfaced at the North Pole in the winter in very thin ice. But if you go a short distance towards Alaska or Canada, the ice is much thicker .  What a complete load of cherry picked BS.

Rowing With Pick Axes

… finesse wasn’t on the cards as pick axes, pulleys and a good old dose of brute force were applied liberally to get the OLD PULTENEY moving.

The pole is at 90N, not 81N, and is covered with fresh snow. But thanks for the laugh.

Government Forecast Bureaucracy Killed Thousands In Texas In 1900

The forecaster on duty in Galveston back then, Isaac Cline, had tried to issue a warning, Emanuel said.

“His hands were tied rather badly by the Washington bureaucracy,” Emanuel said. “The U.S. Weather Bureau had forbidden Cline from issuing his own hurricane warning, it had to go through Washington first.

“He understood a hurricane was coming, but his hands were tied.”

At the time, Cubans had become expert hurricane forecasters and had established “the very first hurricane observation network.” But just three weeks before the deadly storm, the federal government sent out an edict that meteorological information from Cuba to the U.S. was forbidden.

“That one was a confluence of a lot of silly politics,” he said.

After the flood, which claimed his wife and their unborn baby, Cline “was instrumental in agitating for a more advanced network of observations,” Emanuel said.

McKibben Discovers That Hurricanes Occur In The Summer

Hurricane Irene received a massive amount media coverage, but television reports made little or no reference to the role global warming played in the storm. We speak with someone with his eye on climate change and its impact. “We’ve had not only this extraordinary flooding, but on the same day that Hurricane Irene was coming down, Houston set its all-time temperature record, 109 degrees,” says Bill McKibben, co-founder and director of 350.org. “We’re in a new situation.”

http://www.democracynow.org/

There are 1200 USHCN stations (Houston is not one of them.) The temperature record is 120 years long. We would expect that on average, ten stations would break their all time high record this year      1200/120 = 10 .

Superstition is not an excuse for dimwitted alarmism.
