If you put a block of ice inside a dry pot, and put it on a stove with the lid on – the ice will melt and the level of the water will steadily increase. It will not go down for a few minutes and then come back up later. This is basic physics. As the number of molecules of liquid water steadily increases, the level of the water has to steadily increase too. There is no physical mechanism which will allow the level of the water to temporarily decline – even for one second.

If the ice caps are steadily melting, then sea level has to go up every year. Sea level can not be going down, and the ice be melting at a record rate, and ocean heat content be increasing. It is physically impossible, and if you start arguing that it can happen because of statistics – it is because you are spectacularly incompetent to discuss the subject.

It’s impossible to say with certainty that this particular drought — caused by a lingering La Niña event in the Pacific — is a direct result of global warming.

Are they suggesting that a huge body of cold water in the Pacific (La Nina) is caused by global warming? Trenberth once was silly enough to suggest that El Nino was caused by global warming, but this is the first time anyone has displayed enough brain trauma to suggest that La Nina could be caused by global warming. Heat does not make cold.

The permanent drought continues in Colorado. The Poudre River broke its all time July 13 flow record at 2530 cfs at 8:45 this morning. The previous record was in 1984 at 1690 cfs. Flow is more than 1000% of normal for mid-July.

At some point, climate scientists are going to have to deal with the fact that they too are bound by physical law. If the ice melts, the water has to go somewhere – immediately. It can’t show up twenty years later through some perversion of statistics.

A downwards trend can not be a statistically significant upwards trend, no matter how corrupted your Al Gore infected brain may be.
