Over the next few decades, tens of millions of people will be driven from their homes. Braving violence and poverty, they’ll roam desperately across continents and borders in search of work and shelter. Unlike other refugees, though, their plight won’t be blamed simply on the familiar horrors of war or persecution; they’ll blame the weather.

If you haven’t heard about the rising tide of environmental migrants, that’s because throngs of displaced black and brown people don’t evoke the same public sympathy as photos of polar bear cubs. The governments of rich industrialized nations will scramble to shut the gates on the desperate hordes with the same self-serving efficiency with which they’ve long ignored the social, ecological and economic consequences of their prosperity. But both efforts at blissful ignorance will fail, because climate change is forcing society to confront the mounting natural and man-made disasters on the horizon.

UNITED NATIONS — United Nations leaders will demand “concrete results” from the looming Cancun climate summit as global warming is accelerating, a top UN organizer of the event said Monday.

Robert Orr, UN under secretary general for planning, said the next Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report on global warming will be much worse than the last one.

In a previous blog, “Camping Out at the Carnival of Climate Denial,” I discussed how we seem to have come to a strange place as a society on climate change, where scientists have been telling us for over a decade how serious the problem is, and lately they’ve been telling us that unless major changes are begun soon, dangerous tipping points could be reached that could produce devastating dynamics that cannot be “undone.” And yet instead of listening to these warnings from the experts, too many of us are stuck at the carnival of climate denial, allowing the carnival barkers and hucksters to entice and intimidate us into staying, and helping to immobilize our country’s response in the process.

It is well past time for those of us still at the carnival of climate denial to exit the gates and allow the love of God to help us see and face the truth about climate change or global warming and the need to act. Once we do, we will discover that overcoming global warming presents us with tremendous opportunities to love God back and create a better world.

But starting this month, Cambridge will become what is believed to be the first municipality in the country to pay its public employees a stipend in an attempt to defray the cost of the federal tax on health benefits for their same-sex spouses.

The city employees hit by the extra tax pay an additional $1,500 to $3,000 in taxes a year and officials estimate the stipends would cost the city an additional $33,000.

Not only do they have disastrous tax, but they have a massive new bureaucracy dedicated to further eliminating Australian jobs.

THE ranks of Canberra’s bureaucracy will swell by hundreds thanks to the carbon tax.

At least $382 million is to be spent on agencies to implement and regulate the policy.

The Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency’s staff numbers had already more than doubled from 408 in July 2009 to 1027 in June last year in anticipation of the carbon tax.

It was unclear just how many staff would be taken on to create the Clean Energy Regulator, the Climate Change Authority and the Australian Renewable Energy Agency. But a department spokesman said last night the CCA would have nine members and be supported by a “small secretariat” while the regulator would need an additional 200 staff.

“Both bodies will have important roles in the governance of the carbon price mechanism and Australia’s initiatives to tackle climate change,” the spokesman said.
