WASHINGTON — Greenland’s ice sheet melted the most it has in over a half century last year, US government scientists said Tuesday in one of a series of “unmistakable” signs of climate change.

“The world continues to warm,” the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said in a briefing paper for reporters.

“Multiple indicators, same bottom-line conclusion: consistent and unmistakable signal from the top of the atmosphere to the bottom of the oceans.”

If the ice sheets are melting down, then the melted water has to go into the ocean. Sea level has to rise. Problem is, sea level plummeted during the hottest year ever – 2010. To make matters worse, they also claimed near record oceanic heat content and sea surface temperatures – which further undermines their ice sheet story.

Proving once again that you don’t have to know any science to be a climate scientist. In fact, it helps if you don’t.

The danger is pretty close to zero, for two reasons.

1. The nuclear  material is well protected.
2. The chances of the fire reaching any facilities are very small.

I spent a good part of the day running NCAR’s WRF weather model, and there are a couple of things going on which are relevant. The humidity has gone way up with a good chance of rain tomorrow. Also the wind is likely to shift to NW tomorrow – which will blow the fire away from Los Alamos and the laboratories. My observers on the ground in Santa Fe tell me that the WRF forecast for today was perfect.

Yesterday Drudge made a big deal out of 114 degree weather in Phoenix – as if that was unusual at the end of June.  Also, the picture above is sun shining through smoke – not fire. Enough alarmism, please.

Skepticism and doubt are fundamental aspects of science. Denial and belief are words  used by religions – not science. I don’t receive any compensation for this and I know that most of the other skeptical bloggers don’t either.

Many alarmists would have been burning witches had they been born a few hundred years ago. They aren’t interested in facts, but they desperately need something to believe in.

Climate sceptics, deniers, contrarians – call them what you like – are engaged in a fight for column inches, radio waves, TV talk-time and community sentiment.

In Australia, the issue has turned decidedly unsavoury, with climate scientists revealing inboxes chock-full of hate and Government advisors being slurred as Nazis.

But as a memo from US Republican communications guru Frank Luntz revealed in 2003, the most important aspect of climate change denial is not to throw hate, but to sow doubt.

Should the public come to believe that the scientific issues are settled, their views about global warming will change accordingly. Therefore, you need to continue to make the lack of scientific certainty a primary issue in the debate.

Doubt is the product of the climate change denial industry – an industry which is tightly knit, well resourced and globally linked.

Ice is melting faster at both poles as warming attacks its underbelly

There’s disturbing news from both ends of the earth: ice in both Antarctica and the Arctic is under attack by warm water from below.
