They Could Do This, Or They Could Do That, Or They Could Do Nothing At All

Gov. Jerry Brown declared the state’s drought over, but in the long term the availability of water locally is still going to pose a problem, according to a new government report.

A report released last week by the Interior Department said annual flows in three river basins – the Colorado, Rio Grande and San Joaquin – could decline by as much 8 percent to 14 percent over the next four decades.

The Colorado and San Joaquin rivers supply water to Southern California.

I’m sure their (seemingly endless) climate model circle jerk is very fulfilling, but they should be preparing for the floods which will be coming down the Colorado River in a few weeks.

Looks like they are doing a Queensland repeat.

The Cart Pulling The Horse ….

This guy is trying to blame a volcano in Antarctica on the melting ice above it …. sort of like blaming the heat in the barbecue on the steak being cooked.

Accelerated melting of glacial ice decreases the load on the Earth’s crust, thereby decreasing the pressure holding volcanic conduits closed. Already, we are seeing evidence of new volcanic activity in Antarctica. A new, previously unknown volcano has appeared on the sea bottom in waters off the Antarctic Peninsula, in an area with no previous record of volcanic activity.

How long will it take the reputation of science to recover from this lunacy?

Soccer Proxy

I’ve been coaching soccer nearly every Saturday in the Spring and Fall for the last 15 years. Ten years ago, the weather was almost always warm and pleasant. But for the last five years, the weather has been almost invariably cold and miserable on Saturdays. Today’s game was played in snow, sleet and 30-40 MPH winds.

Back To Winter Clothing …..

Other than Thursday and a couple of hours yesterday morning, it has been so cold in Colorado this week that I have had to go back to wearing my winter jacket. UCS would describe this as the “early spring.”

Global Warming Blamed for Heavy Snowstorms, Record Floods

WASHINGTON, DC, March 2, 2011 (ENS) – Global warming is “loading the dice” to increase the frequency of record-setting snowstorms like those that have pounded the United States and Europe the past two winters, said climate scientists on a teleconference held Tuesday by the Union of Concerned Scientists

Study: Global warming will challenge ski industry

Colorado’s ski areas will have to carve runs higher up the mountains and triple their snowmaking if they are to co-exist with global warming over the coming decades, a new study says.

That extra snowmaking will require a lot more water at a time when it is very expensive to buy senior water rights, says the study presented today to the American Geophysical Union conference in San Francisco. And it would have to come from a distance away, because any diversion close by would harm wildlife habitats.

TELLURIDE — According to a recently published report by the National Wildlife Federation on the effects of global warming, Colorado’s ski industry has reason to worry.

Published on Jan. 28 and titled “Odd-Ball Winter Weather: Global Warming’s Wake-Up Call for the Northern United States,” the report outlines oddball winter events across the country and states that those oddities in weather events will continue if global warming pollution continues unabated.

SUMMIT COUNTY — As researchers get closer to pinpointing climate change impacts to the ski industry — at least in New England — one Colorado politician has enlisted some ski luminaries in the fight against global warming.

SALT LAKE CITY — Ski resorts across the country are using the Thanksgiving weekend to jump start their winter seasons, but with every passing year comes a frightening realization: If global temperatures continue to rise, fewer and fewer resorts will be able to open for the traditional beginning of ski season.

The Climate Model Effect

Since the models predicted that Colorado would lose its snow, the snow has gone crazy.

ASPEN, Colorado — If it felt like the snow never stopped in April it wasn’t just your imagination.

Aspen appears to have set a record with 36.35 inches of snow for April, barely eclipsing the old mark of 36 inches in 1970, according to Charlie Bailey, water treatment supervisor with the Aspen Water Department.

Snow was 15 feet deep Friday at the summit of Buffalo Pass

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — The snow at the summit of Buffalo Pass never has been deeper than it was Friday morning.

Mike Gillespie, Colorado Snow Survey supervisor for the Natural Resources Conservation Service in Denver, confirmed that the snow depth at the Tower measuring site stood at 180 inches, or 15 feet, setting a record for measured snow depths there that go back to the mid-1960s. The previous record was the 175-inch snow depth recorded on April 25, 1978.
