Global warming- fewer, but stronger cyclones

Global warming may mean fewer cyclones but they could get stronger, scientists are saying at a national climate change conference in Cairns.

One study from Australia’s national science agency, The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation — or CSIRO — predicts is that rising temperatures could halve the frequency of tropical cyclones.

While other studies suggest there may only be around a 20 per cent reductions in cyclones, the results are likely to have an impact on disaster management planning.

IRELAND WILL be less physically affected by climate change than other countries but will have to face global population shifts, demands for resources and a need for new ideas on how badly-affected regions can cope.

That is according to one of the world’s leading urban geographers Prof Brendan Gleeson, who has joined NUI Maynooth from Griffith University in Australia.

In his inaugural lecture on climate change last night, Prof Gleeson said none of the threats which had faced capitalism over the past 400 years had the “lethal potency” of the climate change danger.

Prof Gleeson said a drier and hotter climate would denude cities of their catchment areas while “more tempestuous weather patterns and rising sea levels” would give rise to more events like the breach of the levees in New Orleans.

Describing a world dominated by a global climate shift, with large numbers of people effectively climate refugees, Prof Gleeson said the new world would “be much less conducive to human existence”.

Scientists counter climate change skeptic

Paula Jasinski knows the science behind climate change isn’t bulletproof.

Yet she thinks there is overwhelming evidence that mankind — not Mother Nature — is chiefly responsible for increasing temperatures that are causing sea levels to rise and other changes to the planet.

“Warming of the climate system is unequivocal,” Jasinski said Wednesday during the 22nd annual Environment Virginia Symposium. “Yes, there’s natural events occurring; but for the large part, it’s human activities causing these events.”

Her opinion matches that of most climate scientists, who argue that power plants, motor vehicles and other conveyances are polluting Earth’s atmosphere and causing the planet to warm.

It contrasts with former NASA scientist Roy W. Spencer, who suggested to several hundred conference attendees on Tuesday that rising temperatures are part of Earth’s natural cycle. Spencer was invited to speak by Gov. Bob McDonnell’s administration, which is fighting federal efforts to counteract global warming.

The Republican-controlled House is expected to pass a much more stringent bill Thursday that would permanently strip the EPA of its authority to regulate greenhouse gases. But its companion version, sponsored by Mitch McConnell (R-Ky) and James Inhofe (R-OK) and backed by most big business lobbies, failed in the Senate by a vote of 50-50, which effectively dooms the House legislation. Sixty votes were required to overcome the possibility of a filibuster.

“It’s clear the Senate rejected efforts to tie the hands of the EPA to limit life-threatening pollution,” said Franz Mantzer, climate and air legislative director for the Natural Resources Defense Council. “Every day that goes by, we see that the choice between jobs and healthy lungs is a false choice.”

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his international colleagues have not gone far enough to avoid “dangerous” climate change, according to an Environment Canada report that could cause problems for the Conservatives on the campaign trail.

The study, published this week in a leading science journal, suggests that global greenhouse gas emissions “must ramp down to zero immediately” to avoid a 2 C rise in the planetary temperature this century. Allowing temperatures to climb more than 2 C could wipe out thousands of species, melt Arctic ice and trigger a rise in sea level of several metres.
