I agree with Steve Goddard! Send this out to everyone you know, so they can see how stupid he is!

Seriously, you do realise an anomaly map shows the difference from some standard temperature, right? You also saw that the 2010 map is the departure from the 1971 to 2000 normal, right?

So what is the 1934 temperature map comparing to, the pre 1934 normal? It’s not labelled on the map, but clearly it can’t be the SAME normal, can it?

Fool.

Our friend thinks he is on to something. He reasons that the two maps below use a different baseline, and that affects the outcome.

July, 2010                                                           July, 1934

Being generous (i.e. accepting Hansen’s adjustments as legit) let’s pretend that the baseline on the 1934 map is 0.4 degrees lower than the baseline on the 2010 map. Given that the granularity of the color bands is 2.0 degrees, we would see very little (if any) change in the map. And we don’t have any way of obtaining that information anyway.

Now, if we look at a more legitimate scenario – i.e. Hansen’s map before if was corrupted – we see that there actually isn’t much (if any) difference in the baselines.

The interesting thing about alarmists is that they tend display an uncanny lack of quantitative skill. For them the fact that the Earth has warmed a few tenths of a degree means that the world is coming to an end.

How Hot Was July, 1934?

The graph below shows USHCN unadjusted temperatures for Manhattan, Kansas. The mean temperature in July, 1934 averaged an astonishing 90.2 degrees. The average high temperature that month was an unbelievable 106.4 degrees!

Wouldn’t it be nice if the climate experts actually learned something about the climate?

Where Do They Find These Expert Weenies?

I live in Colorado and ride my bike up in the mountains every week. As always, there are some patches of dead trees from forest fires, disease, bark beetles etc. I also worked two summers as a wilderness ranger for the USFS  thirty years ago, and I don’t see anything alarming going on in the forests. Overall, they are as healthy as they have ever been.

Yet we have this bizarre subculture of “experts” who have convinced themselves that the forests are doomed and falling apart. The only thing I can figure is that they have no sense or awareness of history. Cycles of drought, fire and disease are a normal and essential part of the forest ecosystem. It is called “natural selection.”

Gore says that four million acres of forest has been lost to pine park beetles over the last 15 years. Put in perspective, that much forest was lost to fire during one week in Wisconsin 140 years ago, when CO2 was 290 ppm.

July 1934 Was Much Hotter Than July 2010

The US press was full of claims last summer that July 2010 was the hottest on record, but NOAA records show that it wasn’t even close to July 1934 – before it got adjusted by Hansen et al.

http://www.usatoday.com/weather/news/extremes/2010-07-30-1Ahotjuly30_ST_N.htm

Below right, I mapped the original July, 1934 Weather Bureau anomaly map (bottom image) into the same color scheme as the July NCDC map (below left.) I had to add two extra (yellow) colors in the 1934 map for anomalies of +8 and +10.

As you can see, July 1934 was much hotter than the “hottest July ever” in 2010.
