Puffington Host : Bamboo Bicycles To Save The Planet

How can you make a green form of transportation even greener? Bryan McClelland may have the answer: bamboo bikes.

McClelland has created the BamBike, a bicycle made out of bamboo. The bicycles are made in Manila, Phillipines, which Reuters reports is one of the most polluted capitals in the world. The bikes, costing around $500, are built by local skilled laborers, and the company advertises that as “a company that is interested in helping out people and the planet,” their bicycles are made with fair-trade labor.

The BamBike frame is made out of cut and dried bamboo lumber and wrapped with Manila hemp fibers. According to McClelland, bamboo is “one of the greenest building materials on earth, so bicycles built out of bamboo are, more or less, the greenest way to get around.”

Not everyone has jumped on the bamboo bandwagon. Some locals are skeptical of the bike’s durability, although McClelland claims that compared to metal, bamboo has the same tensile strength and a higher strength to weight ratio.

What do you think? Would you ride a bamboo bike?

No. Only a moron would spend $500 on a bamboo bike.

UC Professor Seems To Lack Access Too The Internet?

“2010, globally, was the warmest year on record. The warmer parts of the world outweigh the cooler. This would be a measure of global warming,” Evans says, but he cautions that the warm, dry weather will soon come to an end for Santa Cruz.

Whether you call it global warming or climate change, it’s here, say Evans and Gary Griggs, a UC Santa Cruz professor of earth and planetary sciences.

Climate change brings increased water temperatures, upwelling, changes in atmospheric circulation and wind patterns, as well as larger storms, says Griggs.

Surfers take note, since these are all things that affect the waves.

“Not only will sea level continue to rise, but the wave climate seems to be getting a little more energetic,” says Griggs. “

“Food shortages caused by global warming”

http://www.whittierdailynews.com/news/ci_17372948

They missed a few words. The correct statement is “Food shortages caused by global warming activists and other greens who bushed biofuels for the last few decades.”

the Department of Agriculture reported this week that corn reserves are at their lowest level in nearly two decades. Federal officials, according to the New York Times, say the reserves are down because ethanol producers are buying corn as fast as possible in anticipation of a federal policy allowing the amount of corn-based fuel mixed with gasoline to increase from 10 percent to 15 percent. The price of a bushel of corn has doubled in the face of that demand, going from $3.50 a bushel to more than $7 a bushel

Do Climate Scientists Ever Get Anything Right?

Climatologist discusses missed predictions
BY KEN STANFORD EDITOR

ATHENS – You don’t need an expert to tell you this winter’s been unusually cold and messy. But Assistant State Climatologist Pam Knox says Georgia has been suffering along with much of the country due to something called an Arctic Oscillation that counter-acted the La Nina effect that was supposed to bring us a warmer than usual winter.

“While Alaska’s been having very warm temperatures, they’ve been having flow from the south, we have been blasted by this cold air coming down from the Arctic,” Knox told Georgia News Network.
