If A Tree Falls In The Forest and ……

Accuweather reports :

At 5 a.m. Wednesday, Hurricane Julia was upgraded to a Category 4 storm, while her brother, Hurricane Igor, maintained his Category 4 status.
In doing so, Julia also became the strongest hurricane on record so far east.
Although the storm was downgraded to a Category 3 at 5 p.m., this 12-hour period marks only the second time in recorded history that two Category 4 hurricanes were active at the same time in the Atlantic.

Arctic Update From Julienne

Julienne Stroeve from NSIDC sent over some additional information on Arctic happenings.

We called the minimum today, even though JAXA and Bremen showed a decline today.  It still might jump up and down a bit, regions like the Beaufort and Chukchi seem to oscillate daily between increases and decreases, with overall decreases from the first of September until yesterday.  The E. Siberian shows a larger  decrease for the month thus far (twice as much as the Beaufort and Chukchi seas), but the last few days it shows a clear increase and you can see new ice forming in  the MODIS  imagery.  The Laptev Sea is also still showing slight decreases.

“Third World” Chelsea Up 4-1

The Vatican has declared the UK to be  a “third world country”

But at least the English football teams are doing OK. At 60 minutes Chelsea leads MSK Zilina 4-1.

Chelsea scored all five goals – but coming from a third world country they occasionally shoot into the wrong net.

Would Anyone Have Noticed Julia 80 Years Ago?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1933_Atlantic_hurricane_season_map.png

The 1933 Hurricane season was the second most active on record, but no storms were reported in the mid-Atlantic. This was typical of the era – the technology did not exist to track or locate far offshore hurricanes in real time.
